Fallout 1 qick questions

Post » Tue Sep 29, 2009 10:13 am

I don't have the manual you see. So I have some I guess prity basic questions that I need to have answerd before building my character. This is my first playtrough and I want to get it right the first time.

Does the Sniper perk work with Energy Weapons?

How high INT, CHA and Speech do I have to invest in to get access to all dialog options?

Is the gambling skill usefull?

The latest patch states that it removes the time limit from the game. How does that work? Do you get the best ending if you take like forever to complete the game? I would kinda like to nog have to worry about the time. Biggest flaw in Fallout 2 IMO.

What do you think is most rewarding, gaming wise: Violance or diplomacy?

Sniper works for all guns, so that includes Energy weapons.

To get all possible dialogue, I'm not sure, but an INT of 8 or 9 should do the trick, along with 100% Speech (maybe a little bit more or less, I really couldn't tell exactly). I'm not sure if CHA really adds a lot more dialog options. Ausir would be better able to answer this question I think.

Gambling isn't that useful in FO1, since you'll get plenty of money reasonably early in the game.

I think your first quest, finding the water chip, is still something you have to do in 150 gamedays. Just do that (it's not that hard to do in under 150 days) and after that you'll have all the time in the world I think. (On a sidenote: Did FO2 have a definite ending? I've heard someone say it's 13 gameyears, and I've made characters that were level 45 before going to the Enclave oilrig just by killing deathclaws and such, and I've never seen an ending)

The most rewarding gaming wise is both. It depends on the quest you're doing. Just go for what feels right at the moment. Although the violent way does give you the items your enemies have in their inventory.

Why? The game has great replayability, you don't have to do everything your first go-round!

Does the Sniper perk work with Energy Weapons?

I believe it works with all ranged weapons though I might be incorrect.

How high INT, CHA and Speech do I have to invest in to get access to all dialog options?

Not sure of the specifics but if you give at least 7's, build up the speech, and take the speech perks you'll be doing pretty well.

Is the gambling skill usefull?

Meh, I never bother with it.

The latest patch states that it removes the time limit from the game. How does that work? Do you get the best ending if you take like forever to complete the game? I would kinda like to nog have to worry about the time. Biggest flaw in Fallout 2 IMO.

The time limit was no big deal anyway. It's more than enough for you to get the water chip if you focus on getting it done. After that you're basically free to roam around as you please. Same as Fallout 2, actually.

What do you think is most rewarding, gaming wise: Violance or diplomacy?

Try both! Who says you have to stick to one or the other? Think of a rogue scientist...pretty cool, eh? I guarantee if you like the game at all you'll wanna go back and play it a different way anyway. I've been playing both Fallouts 1 & 2 for over a decade now and I still find different ways to play.

One of the better aspects of Fallout 1 is that there is no "right" or "better" way to complete the game. The endings are also more tailored to your actions throughout the game. There really isn't a "best" ending as far as I can tell. You might be suprised at how certain things work out in the end of the game, but I think that's part of the fun.

I think if you want to open all the dialogue options I'd try to get CHA and INT as high as possible, but there's no way you'll be able to see every dialogue option in one playthrough. At least some of them are dependant on a number of skills/ stats, and karma levels.

For example, high INT will let you pick the more intelligent responses at times. But then again, if you have a INT of 1, you get entirely different dialogue options (which can often be kind of fun as well.)

The reason that I want to get the most out of the game the first playtrough is becouse I don't have the time to re-play big games like this over and over again like when I was younger. And since ive heard that this game is supposed to be one of the greatest roleplaying games of our time, I truly want to get the most out of it.

ok, I think im getting a gripp of the overall functions and feeling of the game. Good input from you guys and gals. The whole ending aspect of the game had gotten me a little stressed out, not so mutch anymore. Get the waterchip thing done, then play around.

Nice link there Pistolero, its nice to be able to see what perks that are useless and not beforehand.

Ok, another question. If I got 7 AG, and get the Action boy perk, and then increase my AG by 1, I should be able to have 10 action points am I right? A friend of mine told me that it is in fact possible to increase all the stats in the game with atleast one. I guess thats true? He warned me to not put 10 in anything.

Ok, here's another one: Is there a way to get your allies to upgrade there armor? They seem to get "one hitted" alot.

Hi. Sorry if this is kind of late.

Yes, you will end up with 10 AP. And yes, there's a way to increase all stats by 1. So don't max them at 10.

Unfortunately, in vanilla Fallout 1 you can't. But there's a mod that can change that.

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1135

But you may need the appropriate patches for it to work.

Patch 1: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1076
Patch 2: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1075

I read from the previous posts that you may not have time to do all that. If that's the case, the vanilla NPCs can hold their own. I'm guessing you're already in the later stages, so the weapons and enemies are more powerful and can cause a lot of one hit kills. Beware of
Spoiler
Super Mutants
wielding Big Guns and Energy Weapons. It might be practical to leave them behind before a tough fight, or if you yourself are quite powerful, you may have to draw fire.

Nice info on the patches there, I will try em out. I guess ill get rid of one of my companions for balancing issues thou.

I hope im not at the end of the game yet, since im having so mutch fun. Im only level 9 at the moment. But I have been seeing some mutants with wicked gear. One of them actually managed to kill dogmeat, tycho and ian with one attack! I had to revert to an earlier save at that point.

Good to know about the stats and the AP. I haven't been able to figure out how to increase all stats yet, but ill probebly stumble upon it soon. No fun in ruining the suprice with looking in a guide quite yet.

Ah, that's the spirit! *Sigh* Reminds me of my first time with the game...it was so new and crazy. :fallout:
