Torches and hotkeys (binding over & over again)

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 12:02 pm

I could have sworn that when you have a torch bound to a hotkey and the torch burned out, pressing the hotkey brings up another torch--if you have it in inventory.

But when my torches burn out, I have to bind another to a hotkey, which lasts only as long as that particular torch does.

Repair hammers don't work like this. I don't have to hotkey them over & over.

Is this a bug or is this how it's supposed to work?

Again, I swear this didn't happen during the start of the game.

That happened to me also a while back. Seems to have corrected itself now though. Not sure why.

Definitely a bug of some sort. Could be a mod conflict or OB just getting plain ol' ornery from time to time. Keep it on the same hotkey and rebind as necessary, eventually it'll stick.

If you hotkeyed the torch after you equiped it already, then yes you will have to rebind it again after that one is used up. Try hotkeying the whole pile of torches in your inventory right before you light your next fresh torch.

That's exactly what I've been doing: Hotkeying a stack of torches! But the hotkey gets wiped as soon as the first torch burns out; you have to do it all over again. And again. And again.

Just as I suspected and International Puppy confirms, it's an intermittent bug. My kids says she saw it on another computer, too. Sounds like a job for the Unofficial Oblivion Patch!

Maybe if I switch the hotkey assignment? I'll try that, and report back.

Son of a gun! It started acting up again. Just to confirm, I rebound the torch and wandered around waiting for the torch to go out. When it finally did, I had to rebind it again. :shakehead:

So then I loaded a save from last August. Torch burned out, hit hotkey and up comes another one. Right on cue.

So, there ya go. Looks like a savegame corruption.

For those suffering this glitch on computer...don't forget there are several fine small mods that offer improvements for torch users. I use good old reliable DropLitTorchesOBSE, which of course requires OBSE to function. It includes its on selectable torch hotkey, thus freeing a slot on the game's standard hotkey wheel.

Come to think of it, doesn't the Unofficial Oblivion Patch already come with a selectable torch hotkey icon at the bottom of your inventory list? Or is that added by OOO?

If you're on PC, you could try a mod that has infinite duration torches. http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=40789 is one example. I don't know of any others (which is part of the reason I made it).

Is this the kind of bug the Unofficial Oblivion Patch authors tackle?

As far as I know, the UOP is no longer being updated, but there is a UOP Supplemental that fixes problems that were left behind by the UOP. You should be running the UOP and the Supplemental Patches, as well as the unofficial patches for any DLC you have installed (like KOTN.)

I am. Maybe they never noticed this bug, because they were too busy with other bugs?

Actually, while this advice was true for quite some time it has recently become obsolete. Kevan came back, you see. UOP has been upgraded to v3.4.1. The supplementals are no longer required. (I think Arthmoor removed them from Nexus?) Some of Arthmoor's fixes (from the supplementals) that were considered controversial by some have been placed in an optional ESP provided with v3.4.1. I believe the other Unofficial Patches have seen recent updates by Kevin too.

It should be noted that I have not yet updated to v3.4x but have stuck with 3.3.7 (via Supplemental). No real reason for the delay...just laziness.

I am grateful for the correction. I'll look into the present situation and see if there's a benefit to updating mine. :)

It means reinstalling the game, right?

Probably OOO. I don't see it in my inventory list. I updated UOP to 3.4 from tesnexxus. It added a separate .esp. No change that I can see.

It means reinstalling the game, right?

For the binding issue? I don't think so, I wouldn't.

In my case, it turns out to be a save game corruption. Loading an earlier save confirms that torches remain bound. So there's nothing wrong with the game engine. This is probably true for you as well. If you don't mind loading a save from before you noticed the problem, you'll probably find the same thing.

One strategy is to load a save from last week and see if the torch remains bound to your hotkey. If not, load from two weeks back etc. Try to narrow down when the glitch occurred. Hopefully it happened recently and you don't lose too much progress or time.

The other option, the one I'm considering, is to just live with it and install one or both of the mods recommended by Decrepit and Viper.
