Adding mods for Fallout 3 GOTY Steam version on Win7 machine

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 1:40 pm

Good day,

First off, I apologize if this isn't exactly in the right place, as I'm not sure where this particular question would fit. I do hope someone can help though, as I'd love the assistance.

Moving on, I recently purchased a new computer with Windows 7 and was hoping to re-play Fallout 3 GOTY on this machine. I can download the game through Steam without a problem, but I was hoping to add a mod or two to spice things up, or at least use Fallout Mod Manager to skip the Steam startup to run the game.

What do I have to know to run Fallout 3 properly with mods on Windows 7 64 bit? Can you folks link a tutorial or some such, as well as anything I might need? I've tried searching, but I cannot seem to find this old thread about installing mods (it had a set of videos, actually) and I'm not sure if that'd apply with Windows 7.

Thank you!

I run Fallout 3 Steam version on Win 7 64bit, and it doesn't require any extra steps. Only thing to watch out for is that if you have Steam installed in Program Files (x86) folder, UAC may cause issues with mods.

Cripes. I installed Steam in that exact folder you mentioned.

Is there a way to "move" Steam, if I already have another game installed? Or to install Steam in a specific place? I have Civ 5 on my system right now, you see.

You can tell Steam to back up your games to another folder, then uninstall and reinstall Steam to a custom folder, "C:/Games" or somesuch, and then reinstall the games from the backup without downloading them again.

Will try that now. Thanks for the assist. Hopefully it'll work and I can use mods with Fallout 3 once I finish downloading it.

Is there anything else I should do when running fallout 3 on a Windows 7 machine? like something to avoid crashes and whatnot?

Tech support forum has some suggestions if you have a multi-core CPU. They'll likely have any other tweaks as well.

Personally, I find that GZero's Gboost program helps my stability and performance by shutting down unnecessary computer functions.

Beware of mods that require FOSE. If you do use it, you have to add the fose.exe (or whatever it's called) to Steam via 'Add Non-Steam Game'.

I personally don't like it because it disables Live, and while Live is a POS it does add in achievements. If you don't care about that stuff then no loss.

Not to get the bee hive of annoying people active again, but you could turn off UAC and keep the game where it is. Its an option, that is all.
