Does Fallout 4 need new writers?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 5:30 pm

It really did seem a lot of people were disappointed in FO3's writing (I liked the replicated man quest), and that New Vegas set the standard. Any voices waiting to be heard on this topic? Do you think Fallout 4 should try out a few new writers? I think if Bethesda even hired one new exceptional, it could make all the difference in the world.

After playing NV and some of FO2, I really want Obsidian to be kept as the FO writers. I just didn't realize that FO3 wasn't awesome and lacking originality and story until after I played FONV and the originals.

I think more than one person would need to be hired to actually make a difference, there is power in numbers, and I would assume having one new person with fresh new ideas wouldn't make a big difference if they were bullied and pushed in certain directions.

Yeah I agree with you, I'm just trying to keep my expectations low. I'm hoping that if enough people comment on this thread, Bethesda might sit up and notice, wishful thinkin I know.

Bethesda needs new writers. Obsidian has some great ones, and now that they have Tim Cain.. Three Fallouts worth of writers that know Fallout better then anyone at Bethesda. More importanly they just know how to write an RPG better then the devs of Fallout 3.

I think maybe we should try and come up with more plausible things for Bethesda, instead of just hiring new writers why not work with the ones they have, maybe "train" them or something, something to improve their skills. Maybe they can have lessons, I don't know, something to make them better, cause I'm pretty sure we all know that they aren't going to just fire all their writers especially if they have already been working on it.

Tim Cain is only a programmer.

Tim Cain is only a programmer.

He is mainly a programmer, but he's designing some aswell. He was the one who made Fallout, the first person that started working on it. He also helped write the story for Fallout 2 and designed the Den. He was project leader for Arcanum, project leader and lead designer for Temple of Elemental Evil. But other than that, he's programming for everything else like Fallout and Vampire. Still, being the person that came up with the idea of Fallout gives him some credit for knowing what the universe is like.

Personally I thought fallout 3 had a far better story. I wish for bethesda to work on it entirely. without obsidian.

I'm not saying fire all their writers, but maybe replace a few of them with more "seasoned" veterans, so to speak. Although, I've actually heard from some old school fallout fans that believe Skyrim has superior writing to Fallout 3, so perhaps there's still hope. I'm just not sure why Bethesda hangs on to writers that don't seem incredily proficient at their chosen line of work, or they just don't care? Eh, perhaps Bethesda could "outsource" their writing needs to Obsidian, or something?

I think BGS is trying to aim the writing toward a specific demographic. NV is considered 'too wordy' for a lot of players and that could be a symptom of the problem. They will not bother trying to supply quality if a majority of the customer base does not appreciate it.

I'm talking about his current job at Obsidian, he is only a programmer, he isn't writing any plots or anything, just code.

TIM CAIN! The original creator of the Fallout series! :fallout:

But yeah, New Vegas had more character depth than Fallout 3 but Bethesda has been showing promise in Skyrim so there is hope.

Character depth in Skyrim? Only selectively... I've heard the Muppet "Animal" described as a one dimensional Character - Animal has more dimensions than the followers in Skyrim.

Problem I think is that they need to make a story that still allows freedom of choice, a rigid story is easier to make good but harder to supplement choice into.

Problem is that they are incredible game writers and designers, just they do TES. Considering TES is based on a central hero with one ending, it is incredibly hard to switch that mindset and please those Fallout players. Fallout has multiple endings, Fallout 3 sort of had it but it was undefined and pretty screwed up with Broken Steel that had the good ending. They had the direction right just didn't follow through on it thoroughly.

I love Bethesda for making Fallout 3, it is everything I dreamed of playing, they did it in a city that I visit every so often, it was down and personal and I enjoyed that aspect. I got what a lot of people wish for, "What would Fallout be like if it was done in my hometown?" I got that feeling and loved it.

Bethesda has the GAME writers and artists down, story is a main pothole for them. I am curious to see if they expand the story on the East coast.

TBH though, Point Lookout and The Pitt were Bethesda's greatest story work in the Fallout Universe. If they can do that for Fallout 4... Wow. I will be throwing money at the $150 CE in no time flat.
