Personally, you'd probably be good with either game. I love them both.

Perhaps you have a preference in regards to setting? Fallout 3 is set in post-apocalyptic Washington DC and surrounding areas. As well as DLC locations in Pittsburgh, Point Lookout Maryland, an Alien Mothership, a Virtual Reality Simulation of Anchorage Alaska, and an Airforce Base outside of DC (AAFB).

New Vegas is set in post-apocalyptic Las Vegas and surrounding Mojave Desert (including Hoover Dam). With DLC locations in the Sierre Madre Casino, Zion National Park, Big Mountain Research Center, and a place called "the Divide".

Other than that, New Vegas is more up to date, with more weapons, improved gameplay mechanics, and better writing.

While Fallout 3 (in my opinion) is absolutely superb in both setting and exploration features.

For the money, I'd buy FO:NV for the PC. As I type FO:NV costs $5 on steam, and all of the DLC amounts to $12. Buy it and have it for later.

Deal expires in a few hours.

I like fallout 3 better. I sold new vegas after a month because I didn't feel it had the feeling that a post apocalyptic game should. Point lookout=[censored] great dlc

Fallout 3 is the bigger game with more areas to explore, but is almost depressing in some respects. Sure, it represents very well the atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic world, but I played New Vegas first, and continually missed the mixed atmosphere of NV; where you find a mix of sinister areas and loltastic fun areas.

I should point out as well that Fallout NV has ADS and unarmed combat special moves whereas Fallout 3 does not. Ultimately though your choice should be based on whichever you feel better appeals to your tastes.

Being that I find Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas equally entertaining, I"d suggest Fallout 3 first. By the time you finish Fallout 3, you"ll be ITCHING to play Fallout New Vegas.

Wrong.
New Vegas is smaller.
They have the same size of map, except New Vegas' is largely covered in unscalable mountains, all in all cutting it down the 3/4 its expected size
New Vegas offered more even with its smaller map, I'd pick that one but they are both near equal :fallout:

The actual amount of area taken away by the mountains is unclear, but I severely doubt it's 3/4. The map, even without the outer areas of the map, is roughly the same size as Fallout 3 as it is the same width-wise in some areas and is a fair amount lengthier than Fallout 3's perfect square.

Sorry that my have been my bad wording, I mean whats left of the map because of the mountain is roughly 3/4.
Not that the mountains take up 3/4 :P
I can remember one of the Devs during an interview saying that the maps for F3 and NV were the same size, when he said this I assume he includes the mountains and everything else round the outside borders.
The whole bottom right corner upwards is unexplorable, excluding where the Lakelurks are nested, the Deathclaw Promotory or however it spelt and the tiny bit of the Fort we get to see (but thats more central to top right).

Well both together would be roughly $20 so you should still get both.
