Everyone wants me to die

The biggest problem I have with the game's quests and more specifically faction quests, is that you have no rank, you aren't treated as if you have a rank, and most of even the earliest missions they give you aren't something they should be sending a new member off to do. They seem to have no consideration for your health at all, and/or no awareness of how capable / prepared you are for the tasks they give you.

If you remember Morrowind, progress in a guild was very gradual and related to your abilities. It was paced fairly well, and you weren't sent off on what would be suicidal missions. Now, in Skyrim, they're not quite suicidal missions, but that's obviously only because of level scaling. In Morrowind, you were given quests/duties according to your rank which reflected your abilities to some degree. This was almost like a form of level scaling in it's goal, except it was a more subtle, and IMO better, way of not overwhelming the player with insurmountable tasks. The NPCs seemingly had some knowledge about your character, the ones in Skyrim really don't.

This isn't entirely specific to guilds either, NPCs in general seem to want you to do something incredibly stupid to retrieve some item or whatever for them way too often. It's just most noticeable when it comes to factions. Even in the main quest though, you're given a quest that, I assume most of you know what I'm talking about, shouldn't have been given to the PC so early in the game. Again, of course, the enemy is leveled so no worries, the PC can take it! But it kind of kills the immersion when there's no visible hierarchy to quest difficulty and NPCs will send you wherever to kill whatever regardless of your level.

I feel like the game has me start out essentially as a recognizable badass to everyone, before I've done anything to earn such a reputation, and it feels wrong.

Well you are the Dragonborn...

Actually what annoys me is the opposite. I'm the dragonborn and yet silly villagers are asking me to deliver their love letters and crap. Don't they realise I have more important things to do, like saving the world?

I agree completely. While the game was still enjoyable, there were so many moments where I had to suspend my disbelief because the quests were absurd. The factions always seem to come up with some lame reason why they're sending one person, who just recently joined the faction, on a quest that should realistically take an entire army to complete. On top of that, sometimes it's an extremely important quest that decides the fate of the faction. I don't want to spoil Skyrim so I'll use an example from Oblivion: with the Mages Guild on the verge of defeat at the hands of Mannimarco, you would think they'd send every capable member to defeat this threat, right? Nope, they send one recently recruited mage who manages to single-handedly kill a centuries old necromancer and wipe out his entire legion of necromancer friends. Meanwhile the supposed two most powerful mages in Cyrodiil, Gaspar and Borissean, walk around the Arcane University doing nothing. That's the kind of situation I've seen several times in Skyrim so far. It would've made slightly more sense if the quest givers at least knew you were Dragonborn and thus extremely powerful before they sent you on these suicide missions.

What's even more messed up, is that a number of NPC quest givers even cheerfully remark with how surprised and pleased they are that you're alive after completing their quests. WHY DID YOU SEND ME ON IT THEN ! ! !

Well I have only completed the Companions questline (been roaming) and the only instance I thought was even slightly absurd was when you need to steal
Spoiler
plans from the Silver Hand, but all of the other ones (Companion-faction-wise) you have a shield-sibling and/or you are a werewolf, and they expect you to do as a werewolf should be able to do.

EDIT: I started the DB quests on my old character (deleted), and really, as a DB member, you should be able to handle anything as a single assassin. That is why the DB is so selective when it comes to their recruits. In OB, it is unrealistically easy to join an elite group of assassins.

I also began the College questline on the same old character and so far, I have had a fellow scholar with me. Only been past
Spoiler
Saarthal though

I agree wholly with this. The first quest you get to join the Bard's College is a dungeon delving one for Talos' sake. I'm not training to be a treasure hunter, I want to be a bard damnit! Don't send me to my death cause you're too whimp yourself!

I also love how the MQ forces you to join in killing your first dragon based solely on the fact that "You survived Helgen, so you're the only one here who has experience with dragons". Uh yeah, what do you expect me to do exactly? Point at it and go "Yup, that's a dragon. I know cause I've seen one before"? In case you hadn't noticed, Helgen was fricking massacred. If anything, you should be questioning the fact I survived while everyone else was left to die.

I've only played the mage line in Sk...

I certainly agree with the progression issue: Mw handled this so well, with so many quests to chose from too, there is no progression in Sk. Mw in addition gave you feeling of acceptance and warmth as you progressed and spent time in any given guild building, all those little greetings and how they would become more friendly over time.

In fact the entire Mw disposition system was well implemented for the time, extending all the way down to the price you paid for strider or boat travel. I notice the Sk cart drivers have no regard for either PC disposition or distance to be travelled.

The idea that NPCs are sending you on a suicide mission, well, I certainly had that feeling a few times in Mw. I fact several of the quest givers appeared to reveal their darker sides or political desirers with some appearing to want you dead while others asked you to perform thug duties on their behalf from threats all the way to murder. Luckily there were so many quests and you were always able to find another quest giver with a lighter agenda if you wished.

Certainly Sk, for all its glory, still has a few tricks to learn.
