Oblivion was my very first TES game, so I am going with Oblivion. Skyrim is ok, but I feel restricted. I can't wait for the modders and the release of the Creation Kit to fix this game right. Put spell making back in, remove health regen, and give food a purpose and other various things taken away that I liked in Oblivion. My opinion anyways.

Imo Skyrim is way better in so many ways. I couldn't possible go back to Oblivion now, not that I even liked Oblivion that much to begin with.

Skyrim over oblivion definently.
And people should NOT compare skyrim to morrowind.
Completely different gameplay.

Vanilla for vanilla, it's no contest. Skyrim is the better game in my mind. If a game has to rely on mods in order to be good, then it isn't a good game to begin with - generally speaking of course. I enjoyed Oblivion for what it was worth, but the vanilla game was rather lackluster.

I loved Oblivion to bits and played up until the release of Skyrim, but yes, I too feel Skyrim is much better in practically every way.
I never played Arena, but Daggerfall was disappointing to me back in the day. I bought it, excited by the idea of a wide open fantasy world to explore, only to find that the world consisted only of ugly towns and dungeons. Morrowind was a lot better for me but I still couldn't really get into it... It felt cold and distant and I hated the conversation system. Felt like I was reading a Wikipedia page instead of talking to a person. Oblivion was the first Elder Scrolls game I really fell in love with. As I'm into audio drama, voice acting makes a world of difference to me, even if it's the same voices over and over again.
Skyrim fixes Oblivion's faults and adds more personality to the world, much more content, more diversity and more atmosphere. I couldn't be happier.

Lol yes, I remember the dialogue system. Saying that at least it felt like there was information there, the Oblivion system was neither here nor there and very shallow, made worse by the mini game. Skyrim dialogue is much more interesting and impressive, but still bluffs it's way to a single conclusion and outcome most of the time, but that's to be expected in an Open World game.

This is only without mods i mention here as skyrim dont have many decent mods yet.

Oblivion has a interface with tabs and a mouse slider.
Oblivion has thousands of spells and a spell making altar.
Oblivion has First person riding
Oblivion has Arena and not petty brawls.
Oblivion has Attributes, birth signs, custom classes, Major/Minor skill system.
Oblivion has mouse look where x and y is optimized for the mouse.
Oblivion has The Adoring Fan we all hate with a passion.
Oblivion has a percentage difficulty slider.

It has been a while since i was in Oblivion i will add more eventually.

Vanilla i reckon Skyrim is the superior game but i dont think its better in EVERY way.

Oblivion removed a lot of the skills which made Morrowind unique such as levitation so those faults lie with Oblivion.

But the removal of attributes, replaced by uninteresting perks and a fubar'd magic system is certainly a step backwards in Skyrim.

Equally the increased limitations on equipment slots and the terrible PC UI are steps back. So Skyrim is not a huge leap forward from Oblivion.

What makes the game is the game world, the atmosphere, the quests, the locations, the characters and the improved home mechanics.

Things which are equal to Oblivion or only marginally better is the loot (Still uninspiring) and the awful level scaling (Remind me why i bother to raise levels?)

Bethesda have a lot to learn, most of which could be learned from looking at past games (inc Skyrim) but at the end of the day, their games are still a cut above the competition in most regards.

Oblivion was my favorite RPG since i bought it round about 5 years ago. But after the release of Skyrim and after i got my pre-ordered collectors edition i have to say that it changed. I love Skyrim right from minute 1 on. Sure the Introduction is not as nice and innovative as in TES4, but the Story′s pace grew really fast and with all the possiblities (sure, that was the same in oblivion) for building your champ it is one of the best games i played this year (RPG). Im looking forward for more mods with the CK which will come out soon i hope ( Is there a release date so far?). The graphical development is also really nice but i expected that before because nearly 6 years went through the land since Oblivion came out.
But concluding all... GJ at Bethesda... My expectations are fulfilled and will be excelled with some new mods and updates.

So far I would say yes. I love Oblivion and even to this day have quests I have not yet completed, because the game was so large (the forelorn watchman for example) and because I spent so much time exploring and doing other things in the game.

That being said I think Skyrim has more content overall although the map feels slightly smaller.

There are negatives with the game but they are outweighed by the good points

Yes, it can actually be played comfortably without mods. Well, except with a mage or when you need to use the menus :P

Skyrim > all. Haven't played a game this good since Oblivion, and before it, Morrowind. In my opinion, Skyrim passes both. Once Skyrim gets modded to the level that Oblivion was, it'll be unimaginably good. Vanilla Skyrim is already incredible.
