Stuttering/lagging/periodic bad performance in FNV, how to t

Basically, what I am experiencing now with FNV (and a few other games) is 10-15 minutes of decent play with high framerates on med-high settings, followed by alternating periods of 3-4 minutes good performance and 15-20 seconds of really bad slow performance.

Now, my first two instincts are that this is either an overheating problem or a slow HDD problem.
I checked my temps using Everest and am getting really high numbers, around 100-105 C for my GPU and around 85-90 for my CPU. After doing some googling, the GPU temp seems ok (i know, weird, right?), but the CPU is running a bit hot. Can anyone confirm that those ranges are acceptable or not?
Alternatively, it could just be a slow HDD, although I don't know how I could test for this. I have heard of various ways to improve performance despite a slower HDD: using a 3rd party defragger (which I will do overnight), deleting pagefile and not using virtual memory entirely. Anyone have any luck with similar tweaks?

Or, it could be something more exotic, like a codec or a background service. Is FNV known to conflict with anything common yet?

I had similar problems with Oblivion and my old computer, and in that particular case I narrowed down the problem to an audio codec. Weird. But I forget how I managed to narrow it down.

Acceptable limits or no, that's darn hot and may well be negatively impacting your performance. Laptops usually have safety measures that downclock parts to drop high temps, which would manifest in periods of baaaad performance. You might want to invest in a laptop cooling pad to bring them down.

From personal experience, a quick hard drive does help with these games. They're not very efficient at streaming content. Again, laptops often have slower rpm hard drives to save power, but the impact shouldn't too heavy other than some loading stutter now and again. Do NOT mess with your virtual memory. Games in particular just expect it to be there and Windows performance can be severely impacted. It's not meant to be disabled.

I think your best be would be to drop those temps with a cooling solution. Make sure you're not taxing your system with lots of stuff running in the background or with too high graphic settings (antialiasing in particular will hurt you).

I will second that. These temps are maybe not damaging your hardware, but I would definately think that this is exactly where your problem is. Also because it is a laptop, which I think could be more sensitive to high temperatures (as the components are all very close together).

I would also suggest to get a laptop cooling.

Depending on how old the computer is, you could also check to see if the air vents are clean, and not clogged with dust or dirt.

See, that makes complete sense but I never thought of it before. That would explain it.

I'm going to see if I can open up the unit and try to clean it out. That would make the most sense because I remember most games running very well when I first got the laptop around 5 months ago.

Make sure you're not taxing your system with lots of stuff running in the background or with too high graphic settings (antialiasing in particular will hurt you).


This one I'm not too sure about. For about 80% of the time, FNV and other games will run flawlessly on the graphics settings I have it on, it's just when the temperature hits top that it starts to glitch up.
But perhaps setting the game to lower graphics could make the system heat up slower or less overall? Is that what you are suggesting?

It might help. If there's been a buildup of dust in there that'll be contributing to the heat. A cooling pad is the way to go otherwise.
