The Unepicness of Quests and Other Issues

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:52 pm

1. After some good quest dialogue when the characters stop talking and you disengage from the conversation, those same characters immediate resort to one of their few inane scripted greetings if you get anywhere near them. Immersion breaker.

2. Dragons are pussies. They are also stupid and their hitboxes can't navigate trees or land on an area that doesn't have at least half again their size in empty space. Did I mention that they are stupid? Immersion breaker.

3. Sneak is the same stupid sneak that it was in Oblivion. If you are TWO INCHES in front of another character's face, and you haven't quaffed a potion of invisibility, THEY SHOULD F***ING SEE YOU. I don't care if your sneak skill is 1000. Immersion breaker, big time.

4. While we're on the topic of sneak, if you murder a few guards then get back into sneak mode and another guard comes, sees the bodies, freaks out for about seven seconds, then decides trouble had passed and sits back down to eat the piece of hard, stale bread that seems to be the staple of diet for the people of Skyrim, that kind of breaks any sense of immersion whatsoever for people who like to be assassins. Not much of a challenge once the assassin realizes that everyone seems to have a memory worse than that of a freaking goldfish.

5. The character creation system is incredibly detailed, as much or moreso than it was in Oblivion. Too bad 80% of skyrim's residents have exactly the same face between the male and female models, with slightly different colors of hair. Immersion breaker, and incredibly lazy on the part of Bethesda. You hire more voice actors, but you give most of them the same face? What the hell?! Also, I've heard maybe seven different voices, male and female together, for the common characters. That's about on par with oblivion. Where's the 100+ different character voices I heard about?

Now... I'm finished my trolling/complaining. I now must say that I still love this game and don't regret buying it, but I am just sorely disappointed in these key areas. Bethesda, you can make a really really detailed world, but you NEED to pay attention to those details, or all your attempts at creating an immersive experience become tainted. Please... I don't usually complain on forums because most games aren't worth the time taken to articulate a complaint or complaints. Your game is really worth it. Please do something about these problems with your patches in the future, it would make me happy. I'm sure it would make others happy as well. You guys are really great at what you do, but that little extra TLC would mean so much.

Fully agree. The game's amazing but it just pisses me off that they overlooked so many absolutely NECESSARY things. I agree with all your points 100%. I pickpocket a guy.. "HEY don't do that" .. "did you hear about the murder over in riften??" .. or my favorite retrieve item for the character.. "Thanks so much I will be forever in your debt!!" you leave chat box.. "What are you looking at.. get out of my way.." Or my ultimate favorite one .. ***SPOILER ALERT** When you eventually become boss of the thieves guild.. NO one recognizes you at all that you are the boss... they will just make smart remarks..

On the last point, I find that almost every guy has that same guy VA with the real deep, tough voice...Every guy in the companions guilt, blacksmiths, every guy with a 2h weapon, all got the same VA

ya, i hate how after some things happen the people just revert back to normal.

like if you fist fight someone, after its finished they are like 'welcome!' or something like that

idk how hard it would be, but i wish there was some kind of morality or something implemented.

if i do something to somebody, or do something evil in a quest line or something, i would like more than just the normal response

I have to agree on one point here about character creation. I am a little miffed because I can not make a decent female Dunmer. All the CC females Dark Elves look like beat up old hags and no matter how you play with the options it doesn't help.

To add these details, they would need to reduce details in other areas. Than people would complain about those details not being there. There is a budgetary, time and effort limit and you can't get everything.

Anyway, one some points:
2. Dragons are not perfect, but at the moment they are the best Dragons in RPG genre (in othe places they are practically like 100x stupider... tough they are stupid with a damn good reason and the stupidity of Skyrim dragons is also there for a damn good reason (for starters, pure warriors would be unable to fight them and just making Dragons able to do what they do right now took a lot of effort))

3. This is an RPG first and foremost. If your character's skill is 100, thats the reward you get. For visual immersion, turn to action games where thats the main focus

4. Scripting AI is not as simple as gamers ALWAYS think. Testing and fixing it ain't that simpler either. In other words, you will NEVER get a realistic AI. Better than before yes, but never even nearly a realistic one (especially in a game where so much stuff can be done as Skyrim)

5. Faces are as diverse as these can get. With so many NPC's, you can't even make too many different faces... unless you use computer generated faces but everything that is computer generated looks horrendous.
VA's are diverse, just mostly recycled for services (tough there is also a lot of diversion) as they all use the same dialogue lines anyway so why waste resources?

I'm walking down the road on my way to Windhelm and I notice that a Dragon is atacking the city guards at the front gate. As expected the archers weren't doing all that great a job so I did my best to get the Dragons attention and turn the tide of battle towards the good side. I guess my volley ofarrows got it's attention because it landed right in front of me. With it on the ground I was able to quickly dispatch it and send it to meet it's maker. After killing it you would think the guards that were fighting the Dragon would should some gratitude or even at least acknowledge that I just killed a Dragon but instead they just walk by muttering the same everyday jibber jabber about being bored with their job and so forth. Immersion breaker!

You know, you're right on all of your counter-points. I can't really argue with you outright, but I can, and will, debate.

I won't make more counter-counter-points. Instead, I'll just postulate that since Bethesda is so damn good at what they do, I really think they have it in them to correct some of this erroneous coding/scripting. I also think that we're going to see some corrections in some of these areas after some patches.
