Saved Game(s) taking up a HUGE amount of space - DXDIAG incl

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 10:22 pm

Basically, I noticed my hard drive (slightly under 500 gigs, RAID 0) was down to 50 gigs of space. I looked back through my installed list and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Normally, my free space is just north of 250 gigs. Purely on a hunch, I went back and deleated all but the most current saved game files. BAM, free space right where it should be. So, thinking I could outsmart the code, I decided to save games ontop of the previous save game file. I hope that makes sense? Well, today I noticed I am back down to 50 gigs of space again but, I only have the one saved game file. I deleated the one saved game file, with no change in disk space. I uninstalled the game and recovered the install size amount of HD space, but no dent on the 'missing' 200 or so gigs of free space.

Anyone have any thoughts? This is driving me bonkers. I know it sounds far-fetched but, it's 110% true.

Thanks!

How big are the individual save files? Mine range from about two megs to six megs which isn't much at all.

I make a permanent save every two to three levels, generally before a big decision or quest, and I generally cycle through five or six slots during normal play. I've just started my third character and the 29 save files I have are about 130 megs.

People who save a lot, will eat space fast. So that shouldn't be a surprise. 40 saves are ~230mb give or take a bit. By the time I was finished my first playthrough, I had 152 saves totaling 687mb.

Ah, but the OP says he had one save file and was still losing space.

The answer is probably the hidden backups that Windows uses. Get a program like WinDirStat to show you what is using up your hard drive space.

Probably Windows shadow copies. Right click on your HD and do a disk cleanup, select the system option and go to the 2nd tab to clean up shadow copies. Probably a windows issue

You could download and install http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner *it's free* and anolyze once, you will probably see what's taking up the space and you can clean it up directly.

Thank you all for the very heplful answers - no luck yet. Something odd is going on. I am down to 18 Gigs now. Sounds weird as hell but, it's true. *Something* continues to 'grow' and chew up disk space. I used WinDirStat and it reports the used HD space at 133 gigs, total size 480 - everything normal. Within "my computer" my C drive shows up as mostly full, with 18 gigs of free space.

Just dam odd. Nope, no viruses - I have scanned (repeatidly) and nada.

Something you might try is clearing your system restore points. They can eat up quite a bit of space. ALso CCleaner as the previous poster suggested in case you havent tried that yet.
Make sure your motherboard (sata, raid, etc) drivers are up-to-date. The question is, is this simply windows vista incorrectly reporting your drive space.

Are there any images stored on the drive? Did you set windows to backup certain files or make system images? Unfinished torrents (even torrents that have just started) can eat up disk space.

You may want to check the settings for "Dell datasafe" - backup software which may (or may not) be installed on your computer depending on when you purchased it. It is possible that this software is creating backups in addition to your system restore points and is not using reasonable limits to the size and number of backups. I had thought datasafe was a cloud-storage based backup solution - but I do believe that even if you use the cloud-storage it creates local backups intended to be uploaded when convenient. It's possible that it is either simply creating tons of local backups or creating temporary local backups which then are not being uploaded (no cloud storage configured) or it is failing to delete temporary/redundant backups as it should.

If you do not have "Dell datasafe" running or installed then this would obviously not the the problem but I would still check to see if the system may have come pre-loaded with a 3rd party backup suite.

I think you should try to go through your directory tree to see what folder is taking up too much space.

It is done very easy and only includes a little bit of math. :)

Just open Windows Explorer, and then right click and select properties on each folder, you can then see what folder is the one that is taking up too much space. From there you can then work you way down through the directory tree to pinpoint the exact folder/file, that takes up too much space.

If windows explorer is reporting that the HDD is almost full, but another utility is reporting it as over half empty, you've got an issue with your file system. I recommend running check disk (start -> run -> chkdsk.exe) to make sure your file system isn't reporting errors. You should also check the Event Viewer: System (start -> control panel -> administrator tools -> event viewer: system) and sorting by date, look for red errors regarding Disk I/O or file management. Lastly, you mentioned you're running raid. Perhaps your raid controller (if it's hardware) or software (if it's soft raid) is setup wrong or buggy. It's not a great option, but if you can de-couple your raid without destroying the disk contents, that could be your last resort.

This utility may be of assistance. It "displays your disk usage in a color-coded map that shows what file types and folders take up the most space on your hard drive.".

WinDirStat

Part of the problem appears to be that the usage is not accounted for by adding up the sizes of files and directories normally:

I used WinDirStat and it reports the used HD space at 133 gigs, total size 480 - everything normal. Within "my computer" my C drive shows up as mostly full, with 18 gigs of free space.

So he's already used that and yet the usage is not properly accounted for. This leads me to suspect that it is either something like shadow copies or unusually well hidden 3rd party backup instances.

Thank you all for very constructive, helpful suggestions. I followed your advice and deleted all but the most current restore point and BAM - problem solved.

Thanks again!
