A radical multiplayer idea

Post » Thu Oct 01, 2009 4:45 pm

I was just mulling over the facts that we have about this game (which are few and far between), and I got to thinking of ways that Bethesda could implement an online co-op kind of mode...

I understand that it's a single-player experience, I really do...I was dead against it EVER being anything BUT single player! But thinking about it, allowing you to visit your friend's game, view their character, house, stats etc would actually be pretty cool.

Nothing too intrusive mind (like being able to kill each other/make any game-changing effects to their save), but it'd be pretty cool to hit the archery range with a buddy to level up your Marksman skill, or head out into the woods to hunt with a mate (or 2!).

It's just an idea mind...Bethesda will never make TES Multiplayer I wouldn't have thought, it's just not their thing (and I'm glad!)...I'm just saying that actually, if done conservatively and well thought out, they could possibly create a Multiplayer factor that ADDS to the overall experience of the game (unlike alot of multiplayer RPG's, where it detracts from any single-player fun).

What do you guys think?

As a DLC, probably the only way.

That way they can focus on it, the net code and what not...Also how would one deal with lag? or is this a lan based thing?

Also i would like chat system (something like magical communication) where you could talk to people on their games, nothing like Xfire, but actually built in and lore friendly.

I'm not sure how it could be implemented without ruining the game. It would allow people of low level to possibly get broken equipment early on.

Maybe like Fable - you can step into someone elses world, but not with your own character. Instead you choose from some generic archetypes.

Still there would be problems, including the problem of the game pausing whenever you talk to someone or pick a lock.

I don't see any way they could manage this without significantly reducing the games potential for modification. I value mods much MUCH more than playing with my friends, so I'm dead-set against.

I actually have thought of this too, :D I think its a really great ide if you had the possibility to do it :D
Also imagine the modding possibilities!! making puzzle who you can only solve with a friend or something like that! It would be plain awesome!
and if you did'nt want to play co-op you could just play single player offline :D

..Also how would one deal with lag? or is this a lan based thing?

this is a problem in all online games I'm sure there is a work around :D

I am sorry, but I hate you.

Bethesda Game Studios does not do multiplayer.

I have always said the only way they can implement multi player with ought ruining the game would be ...

To be able to face people on-line in the arena maybe even team games allowing you to gain experience and bet money!

It makes sense and wouldn't ruin any multi player game!

good idea but when pickpocketing you could just remove the funktion that pauses the game :)

why would it reduce the modding potential?

Problem is this. Lets say Bethesda creates an archery range for you and a pal to play around in. Something simple. Then the forums would explode with hate saying Bethesda half assed it and didn't make an in depth multiplayer experience. It seems like fans are never happy anymore. Sooo the only way I could see multiplayer would be an mmo WHiCH is out of the question for Bethesda.

I agree with this, also you should be able to play co-op with up to 3 other friends or something.

I'd way rather have this and no mods then single player with mods, I don't really use mods anyway.

Having said this, if the game is more like morrowind it will be better to have no multiplayer (which I would greatly prefer). OB would have suited online - everything was more structured, and more restricted, and the combat was geared towards online in my opinion.

So what about PC gamers? Because eventually we will all have unique setups(mods, INI, etc), so how would that work?

Because you'd have to guarantee that both games contained the same assets and mechanics in order to function correctly. The second I mod my game (which will be very soon after release) it makes my instance of TES completely incompatible with your own.

Maybe it would just check which of your mods were the same, and then create the world out of it and just untick the rest, it seems doable

no see above. When you played single player all your downloaded mods would be there :)

So like fable,eh still would prefer it to be SP only. Not a terrible idea on how to implement it though.

Basically in Bethesda games,if I want company I will grab a follower or two.

I lik ethe idea of a coop , eventually also add a sub set of missions to be done only in coop mode eventually with a party up to foure people online .... not really a multiplayer game but a coop would be fine and not ruin the imersion .... may be the coop coul dbe available only after you finish the main game with your character and you coul dget into a mission on a distant land with some friends .....

I see where you're coming from, and I'm not saying this would be a bad idea if done right, but the problem is they can't just casually add stuff like this to the game whenever they feel like it. Even additions like this that seem small and insignificant to us end up taking a whole lot of time and resources away from developing the single player experience. It's just not easy to add multiplayer into a game.

The way I see it, the only way multiplayer could be added in without making any fans mad is if they do what EA did with Medal of Honor and they bring in another studio to work on the multiplayer separately.

Yeah, this is the kinda reaction I expected.

And all the reasons you guys just mentioned? That's why it's single-player only...

Although, I think the modding argument is flawed...surely they could implement a piece of code that checks for mod consistency...if the other player doesn't have the mod, it leaves it out for you too during that online session?

But yeah...I think it would be great fun, and I don't understand why people are saying "No! Single player only pl0x" because, if you don't like the multiplayer, you don't have to play it! The best arguments make sense though...it's not something easy to implement, and any time they are spending creating the multiplayer isn't being spent on the single-player, which svcks.
