Can someone spoil lord of soils for me

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 8:30 pm

I did read the first part when it first came out since I was really excited about a potential announcement(that never came that year) and was pretty shocked at whoever made the terrible decision to split it into two books like that. Fast forward to now and I'm just getting around to checking it out. I read a little bit of it before I had to put it down. I remember thinking the first book was a tad on the generic fantasy side, vapid, and the writing was average, but now that I'm no longer excited(thanks in part to it coming out two years after book 1) , I can't but notice it. Now that I'm juggling three other books with one of them being a behemoth(clash of kings), I wouldn't mind having the details spoiled since my primary reason for reading the book in the first place was see what happened in the new era. I really don't think I want to sit through it. :(

Thanks

Someone should come along shortly with a plot summary, but you can find a writeup of all lore details http://imperial-library.info/content/lord-souls-lore-notes.

Hm, since no one provided a summary, here's a really quick one from me.

Annaig cooks really well. Glim helps organize skaw revolt; accidentally kill head of Annaig's kitchen, making Annaig head chef. Annaig forced to poison and kill Glim, but its OK since she preserves his soul in a soul gem and grows him a new Umbriel body. Meanwhile, Sul and Attrebus find Umbra in a castle as Solstheim, and Umbriel is rapidly moving for the Imperial City, killing or displacing all along the way. Colin teams up with Arrese and finds out that Minister Hierem, the 2nd in command of the Empire, is behind Umbriel and wants to take power for himself. Glim is reborn and can talk to the Umbriel-Hist, who tell them that they just want to go home. Umbriel arrives in the Imperial city; Attrebus and Sul captured by Hierem but manage to escape to Umbriel, where they unsuccessfully try to fight Vuhon. Annaig poisons the Umriel trees, and everyone else by extension. Glim convinces her to give the trees an antidote. Attrebus stabs the Ingenium with Umbra, destabilizing the whole thing and killing Vuhon. Sul dies, his soul goes to Vile. Glim takes the trees home. Colin is killed by Arrese, who it turns out wanted godly power too. Attrebus and Annaig ride off into the sunset.

Lol thanks. Kind of glad I didn't read it and from how you worded it, it seems you didn't like it much as well :P

It was better than the first one, and I wouldn't call it bad. My biggest complaint was probably how short it was, but that's at least in part due to my reading habits (12 volume 1000 page series  ). It felt like there should have been more space and more detail - I'd have liked to see more Game of Thrones esque political intrigue (with Hierem, Colin, and Arrese as well as on Umriel), more explanation or investigation of the metaphysics of it all (though I'm not sure we have a POV that is capable of that), and Mazgar's escorting of refugees would really have benefited from a Malazan Deadhouse Gates treatment. The size does make it a nice quick read, so if you have it, you might as well sit down and knock it out in a night or two.
