Why do vampires and necromancers hate each other?

Seems like they'd get along. Also, when you succumb to being a vampire, are you "undead" at all? Or is it just a disease?

Traditionally vampires hate necromancers because vampires are dead and necromancers control the dead. As we know though, things in tes work differently. Without doing too much research I'd guess it's a hang up from when tes lore was more traditional, same reason why ghosts are still part of the lore.

I imagined the same thinng. But vampires are considered to be Undead(Considered! Don't start bragging about that other argument concerning them being alive) and therefore counted among the allies of necromancers, at least in a book which Mannimarco asks his followers, including vampires, to remain silent.

Also, there was a graverobbing necromancer in High Rock that was allied with a vampire who banished him to Cyrodiil, thinking it was the only lenient method.

It might just be they've no reason to be allies and they've no reason to let the other live wherever they meet. I imagine vampires look at necromancers as they look at anyone else; potential meals. Likewise, I imagine necromancers look at vampires as potential corpses.

In reality, vamps shouldn't leave corpses, but burn up into dust. I'd beg it as Game Mechanics that they don't, yet leave their ashes around.

Correction: He asks his followers to send envoys to the vampires and liches. He doesn't claim command over them.

Realization: Oh yes. My bad.

Not only gameplay mechanics. Vampires in lore do turn to dust. Greywyn mentioned his allies turning to dust upon being stabbed by silver weapons in his journal.

I imagine that vampires are responsible for a lot of the "evil undead" stereotypes in Tamriel. Zombies can just work as peaceful farm laborers, but vampires have to feed on people. Things would be a lot easier if that stereotype wasn't around, and that's why necromancers hate vampires.

No vampires are not undead. Being a Vampire is a result of Daedra magic that isn't very well understood at the moment.

Coolio, thanks. I'm also wondering about vampires and the afterlife. In the typical modern stories, they're "cursed" in a way to never be at peace. It probably varies according to race and beliefs, but what happens when you die as a vampire? Do you suffer some kind of consequences?

If there is any consequence in TES, it would be plausible if their souls get caught by Molag Bal and go to his realm. But that is just speculation. And the disease may not effect their souls.

But I don't know that there is actually anything that covers it in the lore. That is just what would make sense to me.

EDIT: Molag Bal is the Deadric Prince who created vampires in order to violate the natural order. To do this, he violated a woman and she bore his spawn.

Thanks! I'm going to run with that possibility of vampires being drawn beyond their control to Molag Bal's realm. He's such an a-hole! Haha. I'm writing a mod and I'll be crediting you :)

In Skyrim, werewolves believe they go to Hircine's realm for eternity. They believe with their beastblood, their souls are drawn closer to the Daedric Prince of the Hunt. Now for vampires, I do not know. Molag Bal did say his follower would have his soul sent screaming to the Outer realms for punishment due to him doing wrong. Vampires would get a bad treatment because Molag Bal's nature is horrible. He's a jerk, and he even calls his own vampires "Little leeches." So if they die, they may go to his realm and have him as a cellmate.

If there's one guy that you know you don't want for a cellmate, it'd probably be the King of [NUMINIT].

while vampires are supposedly created by molag bal, they are pretty much undead because if you were turned in daggerfall then you would wake up in a tomb or something and everyone considers you dead as all factions you were in along with the positions held goes back to zero and you have to do them all again (except the thieves guild and the dark brotherhood as you can only join them once.)
