So, dragons on Tamriel now?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 10:42 am

With the events of Skyrim and all, are dragons breeding again? Personally I'd love to see them in future games because they were such great enemies in Skyrim. I'd also love to see shouts return, but you would have to be dragonborn again, which seems kinda far-fetched.
So, are dragons a settled creature now or will they just die again like the last ones?

I'm pretty sure dragons never breed, what with being timeless immortals and all...

But, anyway, yes, dragons appear to have made a major and long-lasting return to Tamriel. At the end of the game, Parthonax (or whatever his name is) runs off to dominate the rest of the dragons and become a new dragon tyrant, while even after the MQ you encounter random dragons while traveling. It's not shown very well, but in conversation you'll hear that what makes your character special is that dragons stay dead when you kill them. Anyone can make a dragon dead, but its hard to keep them dead unless you're dragonborn, so it's highly unlikely that they'll get hunted back to extinction any time soon.

According to the in-game book There Be Dragons, dragons don't breed or age or have any sort of life-cycle. They simply are.

Wasn't that explained in a previous game? I thought the red dragons aligned with the empire all retreated to some sanctuary somewhere after they stopped feeling like playing a hands-on role in the defense of the empire. And then the ones in Morrowind got starved out by cliffracers :)

However, we absolutely need to figure out what the hell is going on with the dragon lore in Skyrim, especially Alduin. My guess: the dragon war took place in the mythic era, Alduin always mantles Auri-El (you can't bring a dead god to life, but you can bring life to a dead god), and the Alduin described in the Seven Fights is a post-mantle Alduin from a previous kalpa. When the Nords talk about having defeated the dragons in the past, they mean it in the same way I might say we "defeated syphilis." Sure, its still around, but its not a huge threat. They also try to overlook Tiber's use of dragons, because that's almost like Jesus consorting with the devil.

So Alduin is an Alduine?

The Dragon War is the Dawn. Add the myths about Shor and Orkey to those of Ald Son of Ald, then compare.
