anyway I got the staff, and killed the guy messing with the floating orb at the mages school. So now it says go talk to Telfir (I think is his name), had trouble finding him, finally found him way out in a field by one of the towers far, far, away.

So I talked to him (last list of things to do), and he just says "I don't know what to do" , I couldn't ask him anything else, he just keeps walking. It won't check the item "talk to telfir" as completed so I can't go on?

Is this some kind of bug?

Sounds bugged. Do you have a previous save? If so, try reloading it. Are you on the PC??

Well lucky for you there is the console command. I don't know what it is though.

player.setstage x 100

x being the id of the quest. I have no idea what that is, refer to google.

I think its Tolfdir

if you need to, you can use

setstage 'quest id' 'stage'

the quest id is MG08 and 30 is the stage after talking to Tolfdir so

setstage MG08 30
