An open letter to Bethesda. Please help me (and many others)

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 10:56 pm

It seems this latest patch has caused a lot people of people to be seriously pissed off by no longer letting them play their game. I have been playing since it was released, and was having a blast. I hadn't come across any bugs apart from slight stuttering now and then (microstutter). I had about 25 hours in the game, when I went to play on Wednesday evening. Then crash! Everytime I clicked "Play" on the load screen, it crashes after the Bethesda splash screen. A small window pops up to very helpfully tell me that "FNV is no longer working". No [censored] Sherlock. I had a great game, and was looking foward to playing it as much as I did Fallout 3 (125 hours). I am a PC Tech; I have a powerful gaming machine, and I cannot get it to work. I am not going to start all the various (and some extreme) workarounds suggested on here, as this game SHOULD work, and now it doesn't. Bethesda; please at least acknowledge that many people are having an issue even starting the game up since the patch came out. Please bring out a patch as soon as possible to fix this. I and many others would appreciate it.

Thank You.

As a so called PC-Tech, you should know that there's a multitude of error causes which are just out of control of the developer of the game.

These so called work-arounds are mostly helpful to find the actual problem. Since most people can play the game, it's likely that there's a problem which is exclusively on your machine, i.e. that your installation got damaged somehow.

Before crying and shouting I'd recommend using all available options to figure out what the problem is.

Do you want help or are you here just to rant. If here to just rant, let me tell you now, that won't get you very far with the mods.

If you actually want help, then post your dxdiag. As a "pc tech" I'm sure that I don't have to tell you how to do it...or do I?

I've heard worse rants, but yes they get a bit old.

Anyway, some peoples have linked this type of crash to problems with the FFDShow codecs.
Try to blacklist the FONV exe there (if you don't know how, google it, or use the search function of the forum).

It may work, for some it does, but not for all.

I feel your pain man

Do you have by any chance an active mod?

A particular mod (a kind of power armor overhaul) caused this behaviour for me and it was the only time I saw this type of behaviour with the program.

Well...

The raging was exactly the same when FO3 came out.
Just judging from all the "MY GAME IZ BROKKEN, WORST THING EVVAR!!111!!!!!11!!eleven!111" posts, I see no real difference between FONV and FO3.

Still, the nature of a support forum is that mostly people with problems will post there, so that is what you will mostly read.
I'm still quite certain that most people CAN play the game mostly bug/crash free.

Yes, there are engines that are more stable than Gamebryo, and I really hope that, nevertheless the people that cannot play due to bugs will eventually be able to play this game, because it is definitely worth it.

In the meantime, maybe OP can follow some of the suggestions and we are able to help him.

If one person has a problem it's their system, if many people are having problems it's the game.

Thank you gbob452, that was my point exactly. I was not ranting as some have said, I was just trying to politly but strongly say what I thought. I don't have any mods running, and it was a very clean install with a retail disc. I had a fantastic game one day, the patch was realeased, then unable to play it at all. Simple. All I wanted was a simple acknowledgement from Bethesda, that the patch had some unfortunate eefects on some users systems, and that they were at least working on a solution. Thank you El Zoido, I will try that!

I'm not saying that this is the cause of all of your problems running the game, but you do have Nero installed. It has been known to cause issues with previous Bethesda games; Oblivion and Fallout 3 come to mind, I suspect that New Vegas wouldn't be any different.

If all else fails, I would get rid of Nero and try something else instead.

That's the exact spot where the game reads your settings. Disable all mods and DELETE falloutdefault.ini then verify the integrity if your game cache in steam to require it. Then delete the two inis in the my games\falloutnv folder. And if you have that d3d9.dll in the game folder trash it

All I wanted was a simple acknowledgement from Bethesda, that the patch had some unfortunate eefects on some users systems, and that they were at least working on a solution.

And you think bethesda is going to acknowledge you here? Not likely sorry.
Wrong place for this kind of post imo.

Not sure what you have already tried so:

I would recommend a clean boot if you havent done that already.
I also see alot of codecs installed on your system. FFDshow and Nero have caused issues for people.

You can try the nexus workaround if you want. Heres the link (read the description carefully):
Reset directshow filter use:
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35868

If your a pc tech then I would recommend a memory dump. It can quickly show you issues that are there.

Debug:
There is something you can try. Just to be clear are you getting crash exception 0xc0000005 (you can verify in event viewer)?
You can download a program called debugdiag (from microsoft) and catch the crash. The program will create a memory dump and you can anolyze
this for issues.

Link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=28bd5941-c458-46f1-b24d-f60151d875a3&displaylang=en

Download debugdiag.msi (not the x64 version). You may have to go to the install directory to execute the right program. The anolyze only shortcut is installed in the program directory
but not the debugdiag.exe. C:\Program Files (x86)\DebugDiag <-- It should be debugdiag.exe

Its not too hard to get a crash dump from here. Install the program "as admin" by right clicking. Then run it again "as admin".
If the wizard (select rule type) pops up, you want to run fallout 3 nv before proceeding. Afterwards, select crash->a specific process->FalloutNV.exe.

On the next wizard screen you want to select exceptions at the bottom. On the first chance exception screen select add exception.
Find c0000005 (access violation) and select mini-userdump from the action type drop-down menu (you can also select full dump for anolysis later if the mini-dump doesnt show anything).
You can also insert exception codes if you're not getting c0000005.

Click OK and finish out the wizard.
You should see your rule listed in the rules tab. The status should e active and the userdump count 0. Simply go into the game and get it to crash.
After the crash the userdump count should be set to 1. A minidump file is created jsut follow the path listed under user dump.
The mini-dump should be a small file (~200 KB more or less).

Hopefully this helps.

Grasshopper210,

See my post in another topic, below.

Maybe you're like the same problem in the parameter "bInvalidateOlderFiles = 1".

I'll keep trying a solution ...

Note: My hardware and OS work fine...

I have a similar problem, but it isn′t a video card bug.

I sent the following message for the Bethesda′s Support:

"After verifying the integrity of game cache in the local
archives, Steam signals that everything is ok.
However, if parameter "bInvalidateOlderFiles = 1" in ".INI" file, the game
crashes on startup.
Only just run with "bInvalidateOlderFiles = 0".
This only started after upgrading to patch 1.2.0.285" (and continues with 1.2.0.314 patch)

And they reply (but nothing worked and I still can′t replace the textures):

Initial Troubleshooting Steps

1. Exit and restart Steam

2. If the issue persists, exit Steam and rename the ClientRegistry.blob and restart Steam
This file is located in the directory: C:\Program Files\Steam (or whichever directory you specified during installation).
Completely exit from Steam, then rename this file to ClientRegistryOld.blob.
Restart Steam to allow this file to be recreated and test the issue you have seen.

3. If renaming the clientregistry.blob file does not resolve the issue, please exit Steam and delete everything under the Steam installation directory except Steam.exe, the ClientRegistryOld.blob, and the /SteamApps folder - this will force Steam to update when you log in.

4. If the issue persists, repair your game cache files.
From the My Games tab, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
Steam will verify the game cache files (GCF's) - this process may take several minutes.
Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

5. If this issue is only happening on a third party non-Valve game, please try launching the game's .exe directly from its installation folder: C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\. You may also try other .exe's such as Launcher.exe in the game folder to see if a different error message is found.

6. This error could also be caused by having certain Steam files set to Read Only. To resolve this:
Exit Steam.
Navigate to the directory where you installed Steam. (Typically C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files\Valve\.)
Right-click on the Steam folder.
Select Properties.
Check the Read-Only checkbox and press Apply.
Uncheck the Read-Only checkbox and press Apply.

7. Double-check your router configuration to make sure that it is properly configured for Steam. If bypassing the router by connecting directly to your Cable/DSL modem allows the game to work correctly, then please consult the Using a Router with Steam topic for more detailed instructions on configuring your router.

8. Disable all background applications, including Anti-Virus software and Firewalls.
For Windows XP
Click the Start button and select Run.
Type msconfig and click Ok.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If your computer is in Normal Startup do the following:

Click the Selective Startup button.
Uncheck the Load Startup items (or Load Startup Group items) box.
Select the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services.
Click Disable all.
Click Apply and Close.
Restart the computer when prompted.
Once restarted, if the system configuration window appears, close the window. Select No to restarting if prompted.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If your computer is set for Selective Startup do the following:

Click the Startup tab at the top.
Make a note of the items that have checkmarks next to them.
Select Disable all.
Go to the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services.
Make a note of the services that have checkmarks next to them.
Click Disable all.
Click Apply and Close.
Restart the computer when prompted.
Once restarted, if the system configuration window appears, close the window. Select No to restarting if prompted.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the program is working fine then it can be concluded that some of the background applications running in the system were causing the issue.

To identify the program that is conflicting with the program follow the steps given below:

A. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig and click Ok.
B. Click the Startup tab and click Enable all. If the computer was in Selective startup enable the items that correspond to the items noted earlier.
C. Click the Services tab, check the option Hide all Microsoft Services.
D. Click Enable all. If the computer was in Selective startup enable the items that correspond to the services noted earlier.
E. Uncheck one of the services from the list.
F. Click Apply, click Close and restart the computer when prompted.
G. Play the game and test the performance.

Conclusions
If the issue is resolved, the service disabled above (step E) is the cause of the issue. To play the game you must disable this software.
If the issue is still unresolved then uncheck a different service from the list and repeat steps A to G.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the issue is still not resolved check for Start up items which may be conflicting with the game.

A. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig and click Ok.
B. Click the Services tab and click Enable all. If the computer was in Selective startup enable the items that correspond to the services noted earlier.
C. Click the Startup tab and click on Enable All. If the computer was in Selective startup enable the items that correspond to the items noted earlier.
D. Uncheck one of the startup items from the list.
E. Click Apply, click Close and restart the computer.
Play the game and test the performance. If the issue doesn't occur, this confirms that the particular service running on the system is causing issue.
If the issue occurs, check the startup item unchecked in the previous attempt.
Uncheck another startup item and repeat the steps A to E.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the above steps do not help to resolve the issue, follow the steps given below to, revert the changes made in your System Configuration Utility (msconfig):

A. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig and click Ok.
B. Click the Startup tab and click Enable all. If the computer was in Selective startup enable the items that correspond to the services noted earlier.
C. Click the Services tab, check the option Hide all Microsoft Services.

My problem has been resolved! I had already tried all the steps that "bobsbees" had suggested, but nothing worked. What I did do, was take my machine state back to just after when the patch was released, then went through his steps again, and it worked! Due to the brillant help from "bobsbees" my game is at last playing . The cach integrity had been corrupted by the patch release. A HUGE than you bobsbees!!

Whoa---I've had all three games on different machines all with Nero--not a problem playing any of them. Some people just love to bash Nero (and other programs like Norton) and point the finger at them because they really have no clue what so ever as to what the problem actually is and have personal bias/vendetta against useful, functioning and well made programs. Nero is not the problem at all-the game runs flawlessy on my Nero 'damaged' computers, as did Oblivion and Fallout 3! LMAO

P.S.glad you got your problem fixed without going on an unsubstantiated software witchhunt.

I am not bashing NERO or Norton, I have no "vendetta against either program. It has however been reported repeatedly in these forums (Oblivion and Fallout 3) that NERO and ffdshow does cause issues with running the game on some people's rigs. Just because you haven't had any issues with it doesn't mean there aren't others that have.

I really don't appreciate being told that I have sent someone on "an unsubstantiated software witchhunt." The only thing that I suggested is that they can and do cause issues with Bethesda's games, and if all else failed then try something else . Even if my post turned out to not be the cause of OP's problem, it was at least an attempt to help the OP perhaps you might be aware of that concept, then again...

Would have been nice to post a link to where you got help so that others might benefit .. but as long as your problem is fixed that's all that matters right?

As a so called PC-Tech, you should know that there's a multitude of error causes which are just out of control of the developer of the game.

These so called work-arounds are mostly helpful to find the actual problem. Since most people can play the game, it's likely that there's a problem which is exclusively on your machine, i.e. that your installation got damaged somehow. Before crying and shouting I'd recommend using all available options to figure out what the problem is.

I sure do not think the O/P was "crying and shouting." Many gamers have a funny idea about how a new game should play and
if you have problems "not to worry" there will be a patch or maybe a workaround then you can get the game to play as advertised.
This attitude does not apply to any thing else in the known universe...If you buy a new toaster and you have to jump through hoops
to get it to toast your bread you would take it back demand a refund or at the very least a toaster that worked and worked the
first time you plugged it in. I don't think you would give your toaster dealer/manufacture the same consideration many of you give
Bethesda.

In my opinion if you computer matches or exceeds the requirements on the box and all drivers are up-to-date the game should
play and play well period. I also believe the reason FNLV has so many bugs is because they rushed the release in order to hit
the Christmas gift buying season.

This game could have used a couple of months more of fine tunning.

A computer and software is ALOT more complicated than a toaster (apples and oranges). A software company CANNOT be held responsible for ensuring
there product runs on the hundreds of different hardware software combination's. Theres a multitude of reasons why a game doesnt run even on systems that
exceed specifications. All from driver problems to background applications and services. Its not always that easy to say it should just work out of the box.

With that said I also agree that this particular game should have gone through more testing. They should have delayed the release at least until december. But hey thats hind-sight.

Regardless--it's still a wild goose chase.

I said "some". I didn't point a finger at you in particular. It was a generality. I go to many forums and many so called experts associate problems with either Nero or Norton (they tend to be the favourite to bash).
Free free to hint at my lack of itelligence, if it makes you feel better.

so if we're now in discussion about bug-sources, let me tell you from my work kind of pc-support ...
in default windows-settings with drivers by the hardware-manufacturer all works fine.
with custom settings of self-so-called "pc-techs" or installation of some oh so useful tools the problems come ...
interesting that mostly the mentioned "pc-techs" are wondering about e. g. fine-working DHCP or even don't know how to assign manually an IP-adress (first line, first block: 192, second line, first block: 168 ... and so on ... OMG).

no offense to you, Grasshopper ...

so most of the time it would work, if you install windows in the default way ...
install your graphics-card-drivers the default way - don't change settings ...
install the game the default way and use the suggested settings ...
don't use optimizing-tools ...
and all would be fine?

perhaps.

if you would change the default, you should know what you are doing. and how to handle bugs ...
