Questions about College of Winterhold Questline

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 3:14 am

I believe it is clearly stated in the game that the Staff and Eye belong to the same Magnus.

But which Magnus made them?

The god of magic or this guy?: The Staff of Magnus, one of the elder artifacts of Tamriel, was a metaphysical battery of sorts for its creator, Magnus. When used, it absorbs an enemy's health and mystical energy. In time, the Staff will abandon the mage who wields it before he becomes too powerful and upsets the mystical balance it is sworn to protect.

Considering that Magnus can embody powerful mages when he pleases, it is possible that he forged the staff through one of his disciples.

Also, here are a few things I think are important clues:

- The Eye is found in Saarthal; the supposed first settlement made by men in Tamriel
- The Eye has markings in an unknown language. Neither Man nor Mer can read what is written, and I'm pretty sure Dwarven should be ruled out as well.
- Magnus had a part to play in the creation of the world; Ancano taps into the Eye and exclaims: "The power to unmake the world at my fingertips" or some nonsense like that. Surely if Magnus played such a prominent role in creating the world, whatever artifacts he used also have the power to unmake it as well.

TL;DR - my bet is that the "Magnus" in mention is the God of Magic.

They're the same Magnus, both mentions. Magnus is that guy.

Now for the real question: what the hell was the eye of Magnus?

I was annoyed that really nothing was explained at the end of the quest line. It's like - 'we'll just take this off your hands now. oh, you're the arch mage now btw! lol!'

Never really been a fan of giant floating magic balls of doom. The Mages Guild main quest didn't impress me much. I would guess it is the god Magnus.

Yeah, say what you will about Oblivion's MG questline but at least something happened in it. The Winterhold questline was just like a side story in an overall plot we will never see. I liked it until it just ended out of nowhere... also the obsession Bethesda has with making you the boss at the end of every questline was probably never more awkwardly handled.

True that. I've handled it the way I usually do- Just saying it's a figure-head role (there's always a good 2nd in command that takes care of all the actual work, in every example I can think of), and means that I have a responsibility to my fellow mages. Whats-his-name got promoted to "Master Wizard", and that was the position that seemed to take care of all the actual admittance and real work, anyways.

Tolfdir is a massive creeper. When still an Initiate, I'd go to sleep in my assigned bed and I'd find him just sitting on the chair nearby when I'd wake up.

:hubbahubba:

I... have caught him hanging out in the students' bedchambers a lot. Maybe we should all pull him aside and explain the proper boundaries between student and teacher... or, at the very least, old guy and impressionable Dunmer witches/naive Nord magelings/shifty Khajiit casters?

It'd be nice to be able to have a conversation with him of the sort after becoming Arch Mage.

"Listen Tolfdir. Either you stop creeping around the student dorms or I'm gonna have to do a terrible and unimaginable thing. I'm going to have to actually install doors for each of the rooms. That's right, doors!"
" :o "
"It's coming out of your pay, too."

Another thing that I dislike after becoming Arch Mage is being unable to appoint anyone in any other positions. I would have loved to promote that Dunmer lass. She was with me for most of the Guild quests and was pretty darn helpful. She should've been my second in command. That old creeper could just help. :teehee:

Maybe Magnus is like Odin in lacking an occipital orb.
Odin was the god of magic runes. Tenuous, but I see a resemblance between him and the architect of the world.
