Manipulating objects

This may seem like a dumb question but can you manipulate objects that you drop in game? When I'm finished playing for the day my character goes home, fixes stew, has an ale, and reads a book by the fire. I'd like to be able to "set" the ale up rather than dropping it and having it lay on its side. Or when I bring in firewood I'd like to stack it rather than having it thrown everywhere.

Note that the way you pick things up dictates how you set them down; that is, if you pick up something on its side, you will have the devil's own time to set it right side up. I dropped a Butterfly in a Jar on its side and have not been able to stand up correctly since. I rub it up against things, I throw it across the room... no matter what I do, that thing just will not stand. When you pick things up, there needs to be some kind of assumed weight in the bottom so things can stand up correctly.
