Argonian and Khajiit Lore and languages

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 7:57 am

Hello.

I have looked up a bit of Argonian and Khajiit Lore and found little to nothing on the languages.. Also little to nothing on the Argonians and what they have evolved from.. Other than Hist..

I know that Azura had a hand in making the Khajiit .. Who or what made the Argonians?

Why the difference in body type from Morrowind - Skyrim....

I want their languages, what they ate.. habits and habitats. Which God they worshiped, I want it all -s-

Thanks for any feedback..

The Hist made Argonians. The Argonians worship the Hist. I however know nothing of their language.

The only thing about the argonian language is from The Infernal City. To speak true argonian is near impossible for non-argonians. Then there's the simplified version, which other races can, as seen with Annig (breton) and Mere-Glim (argonian) in Infernal City.

As for who made the argonians, the Hist.

For the Khajiit, more or less the same as everyone else with the divines, but with slightly different names, and they're all cats. For language....meows to themselves, likely.

I saw Argonian language described as "clicks and hisses" somewhere but can't remember where. Oh and it's called Jel.

The change is appearance is simply an aesthetic change, they can make them look better so why not?

Although the Khajiit have a lore explanation as to why they are basically humans with cat tails in early TES games and tiger men in newer ones, they take on a different sub species of Khajiit depending on the phase of the moon when they are born which I think is what month it is, the sub species range from battle cats the size of horses that are used as steeds, to tiny housecats that are skilled mages yet cannot speak and communicate through dancing. Whilst this is all slightly interesting, this explanation has never sat right by me, to me it's just a cover up of them simply wanting a new aesthetic direction for the race, and I don't feel they need to make a bunch of extravagant lore to explain why, as we will probably never see this actually implemented in a game, and if there was ever a game in Elsweyr they would probably have to butcher the lore or even disregard it entirely, I can't imagine them spending the amount of time needed to get over 20 sub species right, therefore I think the whole thing is ridiculous. Also it's a bit strange that every Khajiit we meet in a game somehow happens to be born during the same moon phase as every other Khajiit in the game.

There doesn't need to be explanations for aesthetic changes in my opinion, they are simply making them look better, like they do with all the races, it's just that obviously with beast races they make them look however they like instead of just "more human." Look at the differences in appearance from Oblivion to Skyrim, most races look radically different and yet no lore explanation is demanded for them.

Khajiit language is Ta'agra. You can hear it in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfZU7VBsXWA&t=300s, and various other in-game and out-of-game sources mention some words, too.

The Argonians call themselves Saxhleel, which means "People of the Root" in Jel, the Argonian's language. Jel seems to be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for Men and Mer to replicate, though they can use a a less sophisticated version of the language. We only know of a few words that are directly translated from Jel to the common language. Black Marsh is currently ruled by a faction called the An-Xileel, a very exclusive group that wants foreign powers out of the swamps. The Argonians seem to be created by the Hist, and the Hist can change the physical forms of the Argonians through sap ingestion. I suspect that the Hist changed simple lizards into the sentient beings we know today. The Argonians believe that they and all the Hist trees are connected, and upon death, they are reborn as a new Argonian. Interestingly enough, the Argonians have no concept of linear time.

Fixed. Inclusive means you're willing to include others. The An-Xileel mean to exclude all foreigners and non-traditional Argonians.

EDIT: Though the best term would probably be insular, which is what I think you actually meant to say.

More like they want to be left alone in their marsh. And maybe eventually spread the Hist throughout all of Tamriel, which would be the Thalmor (Extreme racial supremacism and all that.) way to go for the Hist.

But I am not a part of the Hist, nor am I an Argonian, so this is just speculation.

If they wanted, they'd have spread further from their invasion, instead of just holding to southern Morrowind, an area often contested by Black Marsh and Morrowind. In addition, they'd have made a move against the Cyrodiils during their weak moments, which they didn't.

Extremely isolationist, sure, but full blown Thalmorists? Doesn't seem to be the case.

The Hist don't care. They've already survived at least one world, they'll survive this one.

Though, the beginning at this one did thin the numbers quite a bit.

I agree. I don't think that the Hist will motivate the Argonians into world domination, but they do not want to have anymore Imperial incursions into Black Marsh, and they definitely don't want the Dunmer near the swamps.

Kind of unrelated, but I remember reading a thread on here (before I signed up and just lurked) about whether the Argonian invasion into Morrowind was justified, and some users said that the Argonians committed genocide on the Dunmer as revenge for slavery...Does anyone remember reading that anywhere? I haven't read the two novels, maybe it does say that, but it just seems like Dunmer-supporters on there were jumping to conclusions. Just curious.

The argonians and khajiit are the most awesome addition of TES series upon classic Tolkieneque fantasy settings, and their culture and characteristics are fascinating! Their portrayal as also the highest point in "Infernal City" to me.

I'm sure our lore experts will fill you up with some serious knowledge in no time. Gotta love this section.

True, but had I been the Hist I would have tried to spread across Blackwood during the Great War. Not only is the area useless to the Empire, it is also a marshy area, perfect for the Hist and their Argonian servants/slaves. Heck, for all we know they could easily be doing that sneakily. Just send in some Argonians to live in Blackwood, spread the Hist tree for tree, and bit for bit the Black Marsh expands. No one would really notice, no one would really care.

You can also read about it http://imperial-library.info/ForumArchives/TaAgra_phrases_and_expressions.html, with (admittedly spotty) info from Douglas Goodall aka Jobasha, who invented the language.

Pfft. Argonians have no language besides the usual one. That's just drunken rambling as they stumble around their marsh all drugged up, worshipping their tree overlords.

Lizards. <_<
