I just saw this in another topic. What "jobs"? How specifically can I increase merchant gold?

Jobs - finishing quests in the city, making a name for yourself will increase the amount of gold a merchant will have. Merchants also have a new collection of gold about every two days as well.

I thought it was referring to jobs like woodcutting, but I guess it could be what Caljen said as well, since I do both in my game and the merchants are getting more gold.

I have done a lot of sidequests and a fair number of woodcutting and working on the sawmill, but the Riverwood trader still has 750 gold.

Value of merchant gold pertains to those sidequests done local to the city. Tons of sidequests completed throughout the game which have nothing to do with the local region will not raise merchant gold.

Example - The blacksmith in Solitude has about 1,000 gold on arrival. Completing one Jarl quest and two misc NPC quests in Solitude raised the merchants purse by 300gp. These quests would not affect a Riverwood trader.

Yes, but I did a lot of my sidequests from the Riverwood barman. Also all Riverwood involved sidequests from other people.
Most of my woodcutting is from the beginning of the game, before I noticed it didnt seem to make a difference.

I am a Thane of Solitude, and the blacksmith's gold has not changed at all. It's at 1097 or something. Same as it's been since the first time I ever visited him. The girl blacksmith in Whiterun has about the same amount of gold as well where I am also a Thane. I haven't seen gold values change at all.

I've done just about every quest I could find in Whiterun, but the vendors have the same gold as when I 1st started the game.

I really don't know what to tell you. The value of merchant gold has increased for me as I move through quests in the local areas. The only other thing I can think of is maybe it's not attached to quests at all but speechcraft?

I'll test it out in Solitude where I know the gold has increased on the merchant and see what results I get.

Maybe its a small bug.
Or it could be that you only buy from the vendors, not sell to them?

Alright, here are my test results.

Merchants will 100% have a different value of gold every two days.

If you buy items from the merchant, their gold will go up. Two days after this, that amount is gone and they return to their normal "random" amount.

Speechcraft has no effect on the overall number of gold a merchant will have when you open the store or two days later.

Here are the test results.

1,134gp to start on day 1.

Two days pass.

1,161gp to start.

Buy items from the merchant to increase the gold they have.

1,832gp on day 1.

Two days pass.

1,158gp to start.

Sorry for the misinformation folks. In my eagerness, I must have purchased items from the blacksmith in Solitude while doing the quests and assumed it was some how connected and returned before the two day cycle happened, giving the illusion that by doing said quests, the merchants had more coin available.

Well, there're special perks in Speechcraft tree for that...
