Conjuration would be good. You will need something to distract attackers from you. You can get all of the spells and are not confined to certain ones. So figure out what kind of strategy to use. I like to conjure something and let it attack, then I unload some destruction magic on them. You will find followers to help draw attention, but it is nice to have something quick to throw out. Alchemy is good for making money. You can buy potions recipes and make potions no matter what your skill level is. I made some invisibility potions which would be very useful for a mage.

I'd say go conjuration and illusion. Use conjuration to kill your enemies/take shots for you, and use illusion to control the battle. You don't even need to touch destruction or alteration.

My Battlemage isn't really using smithing much at all. Conjuration, Destruction, Restoration, Alteration, along with Sneak and Enchanting mostly. I'm thinking she needs to explore the school of Illusion more. It's not something I did in Oblivion and I think I'm missing out.
