Lyrics to 'Dragonborn'

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:12 am

We already know the first verse:

DOVAHKIIN DOVAHKIIN
NAAL OK ZIN LOS VAHRIIN
WAH DEIN VOKUL MAHFAERAAK AHST VAAL
AHRK FIN NOROK PAAL GRAAN
FOD NUST HON ZINDRO ZAAN
DOVAHKIIN FAH HIN KOGAAN MU DRAAL

Which translates to:

Dragonborn Dragonborn
By his honor is sworn
To keep evil forever at bay
And the fiercest foes rout
When they hear triumph's shout
Dragonborn for your blessing we pray

Plus another verse whose place in the song I haven't found (if any):

AHRK FIN KEL LOST PRODAH
DO VED VIING KO FIN KRAH
TOL FOD ZEYMAH WIN KEIN MEYZ FUNDEIN
ALDUIN FEYN DO JUN
KRUZIIK VOKUN STAADNAU
VOTH AAN BAHLOK WAH DIIVON FIN LEIN

Which reads in Cyrodiilic as:

And the scrolls have foretold
Of black wings in the cold
That when brothers wage war come unfurled
Alduin bane of kings
Ancient shadow unbound
With a hunger to swallow the world

But there's a lot in that song that remains unchronicled as far as I know. The second verse, the what appears to be a verse accompanied by a woman singing in the background, then the part sung to the Elder Scrolls theme. Then follows the Dovahkiin verse again.

So, what I'm asking is, has anyone done research on this, or have all of you been too busy actually PLAYING Skyrim to? :P

The strategy guide actually has the whole song in both dragon tongue and English so the whole song is indeed translated.

Note: This is exactly how it is in the strategy guide so it reads differently that how it is sung.

(Chorus)
Dovahkiin, Dovahkiin, naal ok zin los vahriin,
Wah dein vokul mahfaeraak ahst vaal!
Ahrk fin norok paal graan fod nust hon zindro zaan,
Dovahkiin, fah hin kogaan mu draal!

Dragonborn, Dragonborn, by his honor is sworn,
To keep evil forever at bay!
And the fiercest foes rout when they hear triumph's shout,
Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray!

Huzrah nu, kul do od, wah aan bok lingrah vod,
Ahrk fin tey, boziik fun, do fin gein!
Wo lost fron wah ney dov, ahrk fin reyliik do jul,
Voth aan suleyk wah ronit faal kein!

Hearken now, sons of snow, to and age, long ago,
And the tale, boldly told, of the one!
Who was kin to both wyrm, and the races of man,
With a power to rival the sun!

Ahrk fin zul, rok drey kod, nau tol morokei frod,
Rul lot Taazokaan motaad voth kein!
Sahrot Thu'um, med aan tuz, vey zeim hokoron pah,
Ol fin Dovahkiin komeyt ok rein

And the voice, he did wield, on that glorious field,
When the great Tamriel shuddered with war!
Mighty Thu'um, like a blade, cut through enemies all,
As the Dragonborn issued his roar!

(Chorus)
Dovahkiin, Dovahkiin, naal ok zin los vahriin,
Wah dein vokul mahfaeraak ahst vaal!
Ahrk fin norok paal graan fod nust hon zindro zaan,
Dovahkiin, fah hin kogaan mu draal!

Dragonborn, Dragonborn, by his honor is sworn,
To keep evil forever at bay!
And the fiercest foes rout when they hear triumph's shout,
Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray!

Ahrk fin Kel lost prodah, do ved viing ko fin krah,
Tol fod zeymah win kein meyz fundein!
Alduin, feyn do jun, kruziik vokun staadnau,
Voth aan bahlok wah diivon fin lein!

And the Scrolls have foretold, of black wings in the cold
That when brothers wage war come unfurled!
Alduin, Bane of kings, ancient shadow unbound,
With a hunger to swallow the world!

Nuz aan sul, fent alok, fod fin vul dovah nok
Fen kos nahlot mahfaeraak ahrk ruz!
Paaz Keizaal fen kos stin nol bein Alduin jot,
Dovahkiin kos fin saviik do muz!

But a day, shall arise, when the dark dragon's lies,
Will be silenced forever and then!
Fair Skyrim will be free from foul Alduin's maw,
Dragonborn be the savior of men!

(Chorus)
Dovahkiin, Dovahkiin, naal ok zin los vahriin,
Wah dein vokul mahfaeraak ahst vaal!
Ahrk fin norok paal graan fod nust hon zindro zaan,
Dovahkiin, fah hin kogaan mu draal!

Dragonborn, Dragonborn, by his honor is sworn,
To keep evil forever at bay!
And the fiercest foes rout when they hear triumph's shout,
Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray!

Yes this took me a while to write and there's probably somewhere online with it already xD.

If this isn't on the Imperial Library I could put it up if someone wants or someone could copy - paste it.

If you look at the third version in this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUPQpGWDPN4

Is there actually two versions where one sings in english?

Who was the one kin to both wyrm and the races of man? And what are Wyrm?

Are wyrm Dragons?

And a power to rival the sun... What does that mean? It that a Magnus reference?

The dragonborn has the blood of a man and wyrm which is the dragon. Power to rival the sun its a metaphore because of the dragons power in him.

I wonder now though. It says blood of man so that excludes non human races

According to Todd Howard, he asked one of the guys at Bethesda to write a poem/song that rhymes in both English AND Draconic. And supposedly the guy came in the next day, sat the whole poem on Todd's desk, and they went with it. So yeah, it's possible there could be an English version as well. :)

Assuming that tale be true, I hope somebody gets to go home with a nice Christmas bonus this year. Just thinking about all the work that went into designing the dragon language, including the writing system, etc. is almost mind-boggling.

I faintly remember that vid. It was pretty cool :)
Todd asks his team to create the written language too, for dragons
How do we go about it?
Well. Uhm. Dragons would make small little scratches? With their foreclaw?
Sometimes the extra little claws lining their wings? Their talons too, sometimes?
So what's that mean?
We ended up with three marks or so for every letter

The thought process was hilarious but true and simple :)
-----
edit,
that scene might have been the Sound or Art of skyrim vids. not sure which

It must be so inspiring to work on a game like Skyrim and be a big part of it.

Sure. Love to have it.

But for clarity, this is a translation of the song, sung in the ingame music?

It's included in the book Songs of Skyrim, along with the tavern tunes.

Wyrm is an archaic term for dragons. Tolkien used it in The Hobbit, I think.
"power to rival the sun" is just poetic flourish, I'd imagine.

Odd, I found that book in a tavern one night and only saw the tavern tunes. I even remember getting to the last page and thinking "what a shame, I was hoping there'd be more". Maybe I should've tried turning past the blank page I saw on the right.

It may not be like that in the main theme, but it IS, however, sung that way in a very different place (minus a few chorus pieces):

it reads differently that how it is sung.

Actually, it's sung word-for-word in the track "Sovngarde".

EDIT: Guy above me said it hours ago. :sadvaultboy:
