I'm a little confused. Is this section of the Pilgrim's path supposed to look this dark and have no visible walls?

Yep that's how it is supposed to look. It's that dark because to make sure the player understands that he needs to walk in the shadows to survive! Read the Journal mate

Yes, the game will let you die as you walk along falling off the path.

Yes... you need to stay in the Shadows, follow the Shadows..

EDIT: If you heared the dialogues you'll see that the Thieves best friend is the Shadows.. ;D
