Skipped Introductory Training

Ok.. I'm going to do my best to explain this in a way that makes sense.
I started the game, picked my class, ran from the dragon as per story.

Then I sent inside some tower, climbed the staircase, jumped out the window and ran outside of some house.
I followed a guy for a while, went through the caves, past the bear and out the other side.

Leaving the dungeon, the wilderness of Skyrim opens and you see the dragon flying off into the distance, towards Riverwood, completing the quest; after which point, your companion will guide you to the Guardian Stones and then on to Riverwood, where he will take you to either Alvor - Hadvar's uncle, the town's smith - or to Gerdur, Ralof's sister, who owns Riverwood's woodmill.

I think I lost him after we exited the cave. Is there any way to go back and find him again?

He should be in Riverwood if you didn't follow him. It's north of Helgen. If you travel via the road from Helgen to there you'll encounter the Mage stone, along with the Warrior and Thief stones, along the way.

So it doesn't matter that I already talked to some military lady, went to get soldiers to defend Riverwood, went to visit the guys on High Hrothgar, etc?

Thanks!

You never had to follow him, it was optional.

I Just peeled off in a completely random direction after the cave and didn't even get around to visiting riverwood to advance the main plot for another 20 hours.

I get that. I am well versed in this universe (well over 200 hours sunk into Morrowind. No hours n Oblivion though).
I just didn't know it if mattered anymore, so thank you Gen for the information.

I'll find the stone and go from there.

So, uhhh, I kind of killed Gerdur on a character I planned on only fooling around on, 20 levels later he's my favorite, I'm just doomed main quest wise, right? That won't effect much else will it?
