According to my experience anything with weapon and shield will pretty much own anything at high level!
I am playing 1handed, shield, conjuration and restoration with enchanting and alchemy and I'm playing on the hardest setting with ease

Any of them.

And when you bring in enchantments, melee attacks can go insane amounts of damage and destruction spells can be cast without cost. At level 71, you should be pretty much unstoppable anyways.

Me? I'm level 25 and started off as a Battlemage but am leaning towards Spellsword now. Swords just seem to dish out more damage faster than fireballs.

Playing a magic - combat hybrid, basically spell in one hand and sword/mace in the other on the hardest setting. I opted for light armour and have been getting owned for the most part due to lackluster damage from my destruction spells. Either they don't scale the way a new weapon / smithed weapon does or I svck at playing this particular class.

I mostly depend on Lydia and my conjures to tank enemies, if they ever get too close I'll often get 1 shot.

That being said, I'm having a blast with the game. I just hope it gets better at higher levels. My 2nd dragon fight was horrendously hard..

The higher level mage I believe.

Master tier Illusion and Alteration make for godly amounts of control. Dual-cast master tier illusion with the perks all the way up will work against any enemy that isn't outright immune to it's effects. People underestimate these two spell lines and how amazing they are.

With these trees it does not matter how powerful an enemy is, they could have 100,000hp and do 1,000 damage attacks and it would not matter.

have you tried using a staff in the other hand instead of a weapon as this allows for your 1h build and means you can still chuck out the damg from range without having to spend ages waiting for recharge on mana. can get expensive on the soul gems but to be honest they are everywhere and you can learn soul capture pritty early as well.

Spellsword.

Daedric Lord fighting alongside a character who can ward against magic and dragon breath while attacking for 180+ damage per strike with a ridiculously OP Legendary quality Daedric weapon.
