Playing with Xbox controller

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 12:58 am

I haven't played with a controller for ages now, let alone an Xbox one.
I'm considering getting one though so I can hang back in my leather chair with my feet up playing Skyrim projected onto the wall by my HD Beemer to have an experience of epic epicness. ;)

How is playing the game on the controller? It obviously can't compete with the mouse and keyboard but... how awful is it?
Is it a compromise worth making? Or should I just try and set myself up comfortably with my wireless keyboard and mouse? (I don't know how though tbh, I tried it with a different game and failed)

360 controller is way better than mouse + keyboard unless maybe you want to be an archer.

Playing Skyrim with an Xbox 360 controller is far more enjoyable than keyboard+mouse. I'm doing what you're contemplating; playing on PC and kicking back with the controller and it's awesome.

Playing on a PC with a wireless xbox controller. There is no compromise whatsoever.

I play every game beside RTS and counter strike on xbox controller now because it is that much more comfortable.

The game was designed for a controller thus it will feel better playing with one.

It also helps me enjoy melee combat a bit more because of the rumble pack. The hits don't feel like i am slicing through "air".

sounds good, would be good if I could get a 2nd hand one for cheap... wireless shouldn't be an issue if I'm st ~3m away, right?

slightly put off by the archer thing though. I can imagine it's a problem though. my new avatar is a half naked Nord warrior on Master. I use archery with him too, it's a tactical choice more than anything. looking forward to the one-hand+shield action though.

I am having zero problems as an archer and a 360 controller. You are shooting NPCs. Its not CS.

It just depends on the player and the amount of control you want while playing. Having played WoW, with tons of spells mapped to a button press away (warlock), binds, and mods, its refreshing to play with a more streamlined layout.

But the over all game control wont matter for you since you can have the best of both worlds. Once you get the handle of the controller and get just the essentials on your favorites, its a breeze. A very addicting breeze, as if cocaine was in the wind...

I just ordered an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows. It should be here tomorrow. I just hope there's no hassle with key-binding all of the controls onto a controller and instead just a simple "XBOX 360 CONTROLLER" option. :P

lol funny you mention CS. I was typing about CS as you posted that. Anyone who knows whats up knows that nothing compares to a keyboard and mouse for a FPS. If you think a controller is better, you are wrong. No matter what you say. You are wrong. The only thing that might make you think controllers are better is the fact that every shooter that is on a console also has some form of aim assist.

The only problem is you only get 2 key binds and you have to constantly pop in and out of your favorites menu

Or a mage using ranged spells.

For melee, especially in 3rd person, controller is, IMO, the best control method.

It's also easier to navigate the interface with a controller than it is with a M&K.

The controller works great, and you don't have to do a thing to map keys; it's all done automatically. What's more, the game knows what you're using, and any tips that pop up making reference to a specific key are changed to refer to the relevant button on the controller, so you don't have to do any figuring.

I know full well why too many PC gamers hate the 360 controller: because they hate consoles and feel some sort of ridiculous partisan superiority by playing games on a PC. All the UI complaints, all the "Oh meh, the game's been consolized" complaints, all the "wah, it's been dumbed down" comments are based in this.

I'm using a wired controller - wasn't finding a genuine Microsoft wireless adapter to buy online, and I hear they're getting hard to find, and I didn't feel like doing any extensive search, so I just ordered a wired controller and went with that. I guess it means I can't use it waaaaaay the hell away from the laptop, but it's only a 18 inch screen anyway, so I'm not in the same boat as you guys that wanna project the game on the wall. Sounds like a good idea though.

Anyway, the controller works great.

Another vote for controller on PC here.

You get the great graphics, mods and everything else the pc brings but you can still hook it up to your 46 inch screen and relax on the sofa :-)

The main advantage of controller (for me, obviously controls are a matter of personal taste) is increased immersion from true anologue movement (slow moody walks through the wilderness or bazaar in 3rd person, no HUD) and vibration.

No need for the precision a mouse offers in this game.

I'm hearing ye mate.

I was afraid this thread would turn into a console bashing thread soon. Maybe the mouthbreathers are still too shocked and throffing at the mouth to post. Any moment now I'm sure somebody will make a post damning us all, writing a dramatic farewell and announcing how he'll go back to Morrowind... ;)

skyrim on a 90 inch screen... *drool*
it'll be projected onto white plastering which will give it an extra effect.

Yeah. Console-bashing PC partisans are $%#$^ nuts, to me. The Xbox is a great thing.

That being said, I know a fairly hardcoe console gamer who's been playing console games since the days of the SNES and he always snickers at PC games. I keep telling him about awesome types of games for the PC that just svck on consoles, like RTS and turn based strategy games, 4X games, and so forth - even text adventures - but to no effect. He grew up on Zelda and JRPG games and Final Fantasy, so he's pretty much a PC-bashing console partisan. They're all nuts, I say.

Yeah, that sounds pretty cool. I need to hook up the laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable and see how the game looks.
