"Proceed With Caution"

I was fixed on hoping that the next patch for PS3 would fix the broken quests in my file. After some thought, I've changed my mind and decided to create another character and try again one more time after the patch is released. This gives me some time to think of a character build and a gameplan. My last character was a learning experience in three main ways. First, save often and keep a couple back-up saves just in case. Second, I learned more about how I want my perks, skills, and SPECIAL to look next time around. Last, and most importantly, I got an idea on how to go about completing the plot; the order in which I should finish quests. I know it's a massive sandbox RPG and some will say, "you shouldn't have a game plan, just play the way you would if you were in the game" ...or something like that. I agree to an extent, but the way Fallout: New Vegas was made makes it slightly frustrating for some people if you take the "just play" approach, because if you do you'll be restarting a bunch of times to get the full experience. So I thought it would be a decent idea to start a thread with some "caution" points, for the people who want to get as much done as possible on a couple characters instead of making 10+ and logging over 1000 hours of play into the game.

I'll start with a few. Feel free to add any that may have irritated you during your FNV experience.

- If you happen to be scavenging Fiend territory and you run into Vault 3, you might be able to enter without the Fiends being hostile if you pass a speech check. You might wanna kill everyone anyway if you're looking for items and such, but maybe you should wait. Diane, at the Red Rock Drug Lab has a quest that involves Motor-Runner, the leader of the Fiends. If he's dead you can't do that quest, and therefore you cannot learn the Khan Trick from Jack.

- If you clear out Quarry Junction, find Melissa and do her quest, you can't finish the main quest for the Great Khans (Oh My Papa) back at Red Rock Canyon because she disappears from the game.

- If you visit Novac and speak with Ranger Jackson, you can learn an unarmed technique if you visit Ranger Station Charlie for him. Once you've learned the technique, you can't speak to him again. This is unfortunate because you need to be able to talk to him for Raul's companion quest, Old School Ghoul, which is now impossible to complete.

- After completing the quest, The House Always Wins III, you'll get a warning from Caesar and the NCR to stop working the Mr. House if you want to continue to work with them. I would recommend making a save here because if you complete The House Always Wins IV, all your quests with Caesar or the NCR will be failed and you can't change your mind.

Add in any instances in which you accidently/unknowingly broke a quest that you didn't want to.

P.S. I apologize in advance if some people misinterpret this as another thread full of glitches and complaints. I'm a huge fan of the game despite the issues, although I do hope the next patch for PS3 and XBOX 360 will clear up some of these problems. I'm just trying to create a thread for the people like me, who can read through it before starting a new character and keep in mind some facts about the game's plot that might help them avoid upsets or frustration. Finally, if this has been done already just post the link.

*carefully enters thread*

If you reach the point of no return, make sure you have plenty of supplies and ammo or you'll suffer a horribly painful death.

That's not a bug, is it? Sorry. Nevermind.

Do the message delivery of "You Can Depend on Me" Before "Here be Stand with Grass"

If you talk to the lady at the tip near Novac for the first time without having ED-E as your companion, you'll have trouble triggering his companion quest. It won't be broken for good, but it's just easier if you put off talking to her (Old lady Gibson, I think her name is).

Don't kill any Powder Gangers until you sneak inside the prison. Talk to the sheriff there and send him to Primm before NCR attack.
Don't kill McLafferty for Cass at Crimson before you are done with all the tiny quests in Volare!, one of them, Young Hearts, requires talking to her.
Don't even dare to talk to Ranger Andy, Loyal or the dude at McCarran whose name I forgot :-p without Raul in your team.
Don't do Helios One quest unless it's been already 9 days since you talked to Old Lady Gibson with ED-E present - or you will be quite stuck on ED-E's quest for a long while.
Don't take Boone into Legion lands.
Don't pick Hardin as BoS boss if you are siding with NCR later.
Dont' go to Vault 11 unless you are betting against House.
Don't train any skill above 84 (80 for science 88 for explosive). Read the book to get rest of points.
Don't go to Jacobstown until your Science and Speech are through the roof. Quests there require highest checks in the game.
Don't go up the Black Mountain without talking to the guy in the shack at the bottom of the path leading to it.

If you want to do the quest that starts in the church of Searchlight, you have to talk to the survivor in Nipton and accept his quest to save the 2 prisoners from Caesar's legion, even if you won't do it.

Otherwise, when you need to get the location of the cave where the needed clothes are, he will not talk with you again and you won't be able to follow the 3 guys in the locked places.

Approach Searchlight from the east, meet with soldiers first and make sure you search all bodies of "Ghoul Troopers" you kill there. You want to find 9 Dog Tags outside - and there's exactly that many there, they don't respawn. So if you don' tfind all of them misplacing one of bodies for example in some ditch you can't later locate - the quest can't be completed.

For Ranger Andy just hold off on doing his unmarked quest. That will keep his topics active for Raul. Loyal and Sterling, I talk to them long before hooking up with Raul and had no problems finishing his quest. The problem is just with Ranger Andy.

For Vault 11 make a hard save before entering the vault for the first time. Sneak attack all the turrets in the room, or just firing up a stealth-boy and going for the override will avoid any issues. Be nice to see it fixed but it's a minor problem.
