Dragon came, circled, flew away. Bug?

I think if you hide from them or run away they will lose interest and leave you alone

There are also some dragons that just fly, never landing, never attacking anything. You'll see them on your compass as markers shaped like a front facing dragon head.

Out of the 50ish dragons I've seen, at least half have done this. It svcks, but, as far as I can tell, is unavoidable.

Wow, that's not what that is at all. Those icons are spots on the map where there's guaranteed to be a dragon--usually you're sent there from the Jarl of some nearby hold to slay it.

Sometimes a dragon will fly above you being menacing but not actually landing and attacking anything. I assumed this was Alduin and it was a scripted thing, him just tracking the Dragonborn around keeping an eye on him.

I think this is probably it. One time I went in the direction I saw him come from and banged into one of the green dragons, who did attack me, and a dragon burial mound nearby.

That's strange, all of those ones have attacked me
Spoiler
Every one of those has had a word wall by it, too - but this can't signify all of the exterior word walls; the one near Ysgramor's Tomb was unmarked (or maybe it counts as part of the tomb).

This has happened to me a lot recently. I haven't had a decent Dragon smack down in days. They come, they see and then they run away.

"There is one they fear..."

Don't forget that.
They're afraid of the Dragonborn, they're afraid of YOU.

My question is, how feasible is it to track one that flees?
Do they "roost" somewhere?

Do they just despawn?
It doesn't seem like that kind of game to me, I'd like to think that if I was stubborn enough I could eventually catch up with one that runs (or flies as the case may be).

I believe they do just despawn. Last one that flew away from me, I watched him as he flew off towards the horizon and disappeared.

I have occasionally chased them down, but most of the time they just disappear out of sight. Someone should make a foot chase video to the Benny Hill show music.

During the fight, the dragon start flying only to go burn some wolves high in the mountains, I'm like: "for [censored] sake, are you [censored]ting me?!" Then he came back... he totally go out of is way to kill some critters, that makes sense!

One of my first random encounters happened when I was really low level and he landed attacked me and then flew off to fight two bears. I was a bit frustrated as I had to chase him all over the place but in the end he came back 75% dead.....dragging two angry bears onto me.

As others have mentioned sometimes they cant land, they are distracted by something else or maybe they just get bored because since then I have had dragons leave after getting a few melee hits in. I think this is better then always fighting to the death though. A few random behaviours like frenzy or fear if your wearing certain dragon armour would be be interesting.

Many mobs have "rubber band" functions that tell them how far from their spawn point they can chase you before meandering back into their zone. I imagine dragons have a large range, but since they fly all over the place, if you happen to encounter one near the edge of its range, it might cross that invisible line during the fight, and be told by the ai to head back to the spawn point. That's what I suspect, anyway.

Hmm, perhaps I was trekking up the wrong mountain. The instance I described happened to me while I was trying to find Azura's Shrine, and I noticed a lot of the mountains were close together. Perhaps there are some that are assigned to a mountain top and will only attack when the Dohnakin is on that particular mountain top?

This happens to me a lot too, usually after guild quests(college or companions), I always thought it was Alduin too because it looked like it had the massive antler looking horns that Alduin has at the start of the game.

Gonna kill ya gonna kill ya gonna kill ya...[breaths fire] gonna kill ya gonna kill ya...ooo look, shiny! K thanx bye

I actually like how the dragon will sometimes land and fight, sometimes land on a high place and breath on you and not come to blows, sometimes do a little of both, and sometimes say 'F you I got better things to do right now'

Not a bug. There are several AI for different dragons. Some leave their roost and look for trouble. If they don't find any they fly back. Some are spawned based on time and near your location, while others have other duties. They did a good job on this. Honestly, I love it when ones close but doesn't see me and circles near by and then fly's off. It's freaky.
