Scaled or linear. Polarised view?

I wonder why discussions over level scaling always have the same counter argument, that otherwise the game will be linear. I seriously doubt that the protagonists of the linear argument understand linearity, to me, any fight that is too difficult either needs delaying until some advantage is gained (through equipment or ability), or a different approach is needed. Linearity in games means that one activity MUST be achieved before you can even do ANYTHING else. Quite obviously, this is not the case in Skyrim, even if levelling was removed.

The other thing I hear is that how can a low level character possibly beat a higher level character? I believe a level 5 character can beat a level 30 character. It just takes time, cunning & imagination, surely the basics of RPG gaming. Either that, or wait until you're levelled up, everyone's happy. I don't believe in the video game paradigm of all areas must be accessible in roughly the same difficulty levels approach, however it seems like many people do, so obviously it's an opinion thing. Do I wish for a blanding of gaming experience, or do I wish for a variable gaming experience where I cannot know for sure how any given situation will turn out?

I think Skyrim achieves this for the most part. At level 15 or so I still run into enemies that stomp all over me. As well as enemies that die rather easily. I hope that at level 30 I get the same experience, but somewhat more biased in my favour, seeing as I earned it :) and more areas become more accessible as a result.

I would say,

1 ) Scaling is all ok, BUT.
2 ) To the game to be a bit more long, it would be nice to have areas outlined in map and travelling merchants/travellers/adventurers can give info to the player how hard that certain area is. Thus meaning Starting area/zone ie outlined are in map with ie 10 dungeons 2 citys would be for level 8-16, but after it is cleared 1st time and not claimed by the player or other factions for base or mining place, the dungeon is inhabitet after x days by randomly selected faction of monsters, ie spiders/necromancers/etc etc etc.
3) loot boxes would be filled and one magical item would be generated to the end box, with end boss.

Thus players would have incentives to clear places and then wait for the cleared sign to disappear from dungeons and then redo a dungeon, its same layout, but with harder mobs,+better loot.

IF Skyrim gets DLCs for outdoors and dungeons/cities for Oblivion areas AND Morrowind areas (one DLC Morrowind, one DLC Oblivion) would make the combined playing area so huge that well, the scaling areas could be ie.

1-7 (starting area)
8-16
16-24
24-32
32-40
40-48
48-56
56-64
64-72
72-80
80-88
88-96
96-104
104-120

With the combined areas from Morrowind and Oblivion i am sure those areas would be found in game. And after 1st clear the dungeon would always reset, to reflect the player level. And well if you wonder off to wrong zones and dont ask around from travellers about their experience in the dungeons, about how hard it is out there, and you just go and face the lvl 80+ dungeons with lvl 20 character... well you get yourself handed back to yourself in 2 pieces.

Thus it would be awesome, and there should be a warning that the area you are leaving is suitable for you and the new area your are entering is harsh and dangerous, and should be entered in later time ( " you get a feeling that you should not go to x area/zeon " ).

Add once a month, prayer to your GoD to teleport you back to your home city. (for those OSH... situtations when stumbling into a wrong place, or simply you be trapped in some place).

Gold sink is needed in Skyrim, ie, your own faction, keep/base, NPCs, your city folk/tax payers, and paying for the upkeep/guards etc etc etc. Training and gearing etc, money will be needed in large quantities. thus when you have loads you can use it, as well who needs 500 000 gold when you already have almost all the best items in game (plus your followers have them also). Thus the money sink and war vs other factions would drive the end game much further. Also enabling more factions to war with and explore.
