I had Lydia for awhile on some of my characters. However, the character I am finally settled on, any follower would just get in the way. I will likely miss the extra carrying capacity. While the AI does seem somewhat improved, its still not good enough to warrant keeping them around for my stealthy mage character.

Lydia.

1) She was personally appointed to me to be my housecarl and that makes it much more special

2) Decked out in full dwarven armor, she is an excellent tank for my pure mage. First into battle, last to leave.

3) Love it when she says "I'll protect you with my life". You just don't get that kind of response from mercenaries whose loyalty is only bought by cash.

4) Appearance wise, she's a tough looking girl, yet feminine looking. Nice combination IMO.

One time, someone challenged me to a magic duel. I accepted it, and Lydia just ran up to him and chop him to pieces.
The poor chap was shouting something like "Hey! This was only supposed to be a 1 on 1 fight!" I loled.

My Lydia. My Protector.

Borgakh the Steel Heart.

Why? Because she's the first female Orc I've come across, her being a beastly tank is just a bonus. She goes perfectly with my Orc Mage.

Marcurio - he's like the Skyrim version of Fawkes. Funny dialogue too. I used to have Jordis (housecarl from Solitude) but she's just like Lydia without the attitude.

I have Onmund with me, I love how he makes comments on literally everything. I really feel like he actually reacts to the places we go to, which is cool. But he's a [censored] [censored] who can't fight for [censored], but I still enjoy his company and chatting with him nonetheless :P

I'm using Kharjo, he's the best follower I've found so far. He's the coolest looking Khajiit in the game who always smiles even when bashing in Skeever skull. He has a cool voice, is great with heavy armour and one handed, and he occasionally notifies you of danger ahead - especially when sneaking around. I think he's the best follower in the game.

Other than that, I like Erandur, who you fight with in the Dawnstar quest.

Why is everyone using Lydia? You do know that once you first choose them as a follower they don't increase in level or skill, right?

I always find that guy outside riften

That's not the same guy.

Eola is currently following me. For those who don't recognize the name...
Spoiler
she's the Breton cannibal you find in Markarth's Hall of the Dead, and the leader of the Namira Coven.

She's awesome. In addition to being one of my favorite NPCs, she's a total badass in combat, conjuring things, raising corpses, and shooting spells. She makes me realize how boring my combat style is and spices things up!

EDIT: As further proof of her badassery in combat, I recently gave her two staffs, one that makes a 50 point flame wall, and the other that makes a 50 point lightning wall. She has a fireball staff as well, and often switches between spells, a sword, and the staff in different combinations. Well, I came across a Bandit Chief with several Bandit friends, and all of a sudden, I see Eola has equipped BOTH the destruction-wall staffs and then she unleashed an incredible pillar of fire and lightning that filled the entire room and the hallway leading out. I couldn't even see, all I could hear were the fleeting cries of the Bandits as they died. What a beast Eola is.

Did you cheat and use a console command? Cause I tried to get her to marry me because of how badass she was, but the option never appeared.
I'm tempted to use the commands, but I heard it could break your game.
