Mercy?

Why did BGS put in this "Have mercy..." or "I yield..." stuff that NPCs say? There is absolutely no point, since without fail, the NPC will heal itself after a short moment and then immediately attack again. Anyone else have this reaction?

I thought they'd.... y'know. Literally "run for their lives"? But no. I showed mercy to a bandit once because she specifically asked for mercy. Next second she said "No... not like this", and without any restoration pulled a dagger at me.

It adds something, sure. Now I feel that I'm not mowing down mindless mudcrab fighters, but then again I kinda feel disappointed. Being a good guy will rip you off is the message here.

It's realistic, once you know for a fact you can't win you'll beg for mercy or act like you give up to catch your enemy off guard.

Yes, I've had that happen. It worked once. I seriously thought there was a surrender option. Then the guy jumped back up and came at my character again.

Well, fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice . . .

He's quite dead now.

On strange thing that just happened in my game. I was fighting the first dragon, after finding the Dragon stone. With the help of the Whiterun guard, I get dragon down to it's last life, and suddenly there's a cutscene and my character is atop the dragon's head, putting her sword in it's skull, and the dragon cries out:

"Dovahkiin, No!"

I felt horrible for killing that dragon after that.

Had the same issue. Since they had thrown it in they should have added some different behaviour for spared enemies. Have them thank you and flee. Or even just flee. Not recover and resume viciously attacking you. Even having some flee while others take the opportunity to attempt a sneak attack on you (by just having them do the current "Yarr!!! KillKillKIll!!" routine) would add a lot of depth to the encounters.

Though i do like brutally finishing off a helpless opponent as they pathetically beg for their lives.

Some opponents will actually stop fighting you, just not many; if you want to be honorable, let him get back up and start attacking again to finish him.

Yeah, but every single aggro NPC? I could see that happening sometimes, but at least some percentage should either run away or "give up" which would be more realistic.

Edit: This reply was to those who think it was quite realistic to have the NPCs behave that way 100% of the time.

I've tried many times to sheath my axe and give the pathetic worm mercy.. they just get back up and attack me so i put them down.

My Orc would not normally show any mercy but i thought it would have been cool if when they asked for mercy they would run off after we sheath our weapons. Yet, every time they get back up and try again.
