Running slow for no reason

Post » Sat Oct 10, 2009 10:50 am

Hello,

I looked at the system specifications before buying the game from STEAM and realised I have Ample to play it

My Prossesor is 2.50Ghz
Graphics is 256mb
Memory is over 700 mb
and everything is Direct X compatible

HOWEVER ; When I play the wilderness... I get about.... 10FPS and indoors, hardly any higher than 20FPS
When I pause or use my Jurnal though it shoots to over 100FPS... I have tried lowering the graphics All the way. but still absolutly no change in it... Except maybe I got 15FPS outside and 30 indoors.... Does anyone know what's wrong?
It can't be my HDD because I recently installed the whole thing again on Windows XP

Is anyone there that can assist?

Thank you in advance

What kind of video card do you have? At only 256 meg of VRAM, it doesn't sound like it's going to be powerful enough. And you need to get more RAM, 700 mb isn't nearly enough. You should have at least 2 gig. Your CPU doesn't sound all that great either, but it's hard to tell for sure since you don't mention what kind it is. If you want people to give you advice about your system, you really need to be more specific. Run a DXDiag and post the results. Overall though I'd say that your system is at the very bottom for running the game so you're not going to get very good performance out of it.

Here's what I have :

Pentium 4 2.50GHz
NVidia Gforce 7600 Series (256mb)
Over 700mb of RAM
Paging file : Computer Decides

However
The game sepcification states :
Pentium 4 CPU 2GHz or greater
512 mb of RAM
128 mb of Graphics memory
Windows XP/2000/XP 64bit

As you can see.... I have enough to play even on the lowest setting I had issues
I will run the DXDiag now...

Edit : DXDiag run, All tests were successful I have
768 mb of RAM
NVIDIA Gforce 7600 GS 256.0mb
System manufacture : Pacard Bell NEC
Over 1000 mb of paging file availible
DirectX version 9.0c
Intel®Pentium® 4 2.50GHz CPU

As a final statement to this Left 4 Dead 2 runs at a relativly smooth 25FPS and in the odd case 10FPS when things get too bad on screen.... But this has more spec than Oblivion requires.... I just think it's strange

What you listed are the MINIMUM SPECs -- Defined as what is needed to get the game to run at all !! -- the recommended spec is :

Recommended:
* 3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 1 GB System RAM
* ATI X800 series, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

and that is more what is needed to get a playable game at low - mid settings -- (Note: the 7600GS is lower performance than the 6800 - it is a newer generation but a step down in performance rating IE. the secon number denotes the main tasks it was designed for 1-3 office apps, 4-6 mostly office apps with some light gaming, and 7-9 more complex 3d gaming, -- so the 6800 was designed for gaming where the 7600 is a mid range dual purpose card !

So you are below recommended on the video card - Ram - and CPU speed -- resulting in sub par performance.

Well - they are trying to sell the game afterall !! (and they are not guaranteeing how it will run just that it will run with those specs)

Yes, very true but they show all Valve requirments and recommended...
Having said all this though, I have been reading through some of the old posts that have been posted and I tried OldOblivion which seems to work considerably better than anything I have tried so far, all be it Manageable anyway

Thank you for the help, everyone and this topic may now close

Err....you don't need Oldblivion at all. That mod is for older cards (in some cases chipsets) that don't support the needed shaders to run the game. It will essentially downgrade the game's shaders to allow these older cards/chips to play. You're not playing the game the way it should be played.

I think you should tinker more with the settings to get the game at a tolerable level.

- Loosen up on the vegetation (grass, trees) and shadows especially
- Turn off self shadows as they are broken. Try medium textures.
- Try using some performance mods as well. Here's a list for tons of them:

LowPolyGrass, Streamline, Operation Optimization, Oblivion Polygone Overhaul were some decent mods.
