How do you do those animation assassination kills from behind? Do you have to have only a dagger and be in stealth, can you use other weapons?

You do not need a dagger-sword works just fine. Yes you have to be behind, sneaking, and undetected. Pickpocket range is how close you need to be.

I am using the Xbox controller for the PC version.

I've only done it with daggers. My character is quite an assassin, however who enchants her daggers to steal souls... she gets the 16x or 15x damage with daggers.

You should approach the enemy from behind and be wielding a dagger. You should be crouching and you shouldn't be discovered...or at least in theory, if you are discovered and immediately hit the attack button, you deal assassination kill even after being discovered!

When wielding the dagger in the other hand you could have any weapon or spell, but from my experience the true assassination kill is with dagger. If you were wielding a fire or lighting spell, you'll have some odd assassination scene, since you'll take the victim by the throat and burn it or shock him
while thrusting your dagger through his or her ribs. Assassination kills are one of the things I love the most from Skyrim.

So, does the assassination kill always work or do you need to be able to deal enough damage to kill the person? Could you kill a hard boss with a weak iron dagger, or do you need the best? Also, I couldn't get it to work when wielding the dagger in my left hand. Does it have to be right?

I love doing assassination kills too. I once killed a dragon priest that way, and the final spirit enemy in... volunruud I think it was. : )

Edit: One great tactic I love to use is to sneak, shoot someone with an arrow, hide as they try to find you, and as they start to walk away I sneak up behind them and slit their throat. Very effective, and fun!

Yes tonberry, I think you have to be able to safely one shot the thing for it to do the animation.

As for the rest, I believe it only animates on humanoid models (and not falmer either). You have to attack with one dagger, though you can be holding 2 weapons. You have to be behind them in stealth.

You have to deal enough damage to kill the target. Please note that you CAN use power attacks. Also, you won't ALWAYS get the animation, I think it's a bit random whether you do.

It depends on a lot of other factors, such as your level (and therefore the boss's level), your skill with daggers and sneak (multiplier on daggers), perks you picked, poisons/enchantments used, etc. in theory, it is possible, but the better your weapon (and all other aforementioned things), the better your chances are.
