Unique Vs. Total

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:30 am

I've dropped by my Fresh Faces II mod on Nexus a few times and see that the Total number of DL's is almost 100 more than the Unique DL's - does this mean people are downloading more than once or that a download failed and had to be retried?

I've searched through the Wiki there but can't find any explanation

Would someone please let me know what the difference is

Thanks

Illy

No idea what the difference is but if it helps any I often download mods over and over again for various reasons. Could also mean that there's a few people using a shared IP downloading stuff maybe  When in doubt ask TVD he's a mod over there now too.

My guesstimate is...
Unique DLs count for two things: individual file counts, and individual member counts. What I mean is, if a mod has two files, the unique DLs could represent the DLs for the latest file or individuals files. It could also count one DL per member who downloads, and if that member downloads again, their DL count isn't added. This way you can see how many different people downloaded your mod and if people downloaded the mod files/updates more than once. So a high total DL count with a low unique DL count could mean that not many people downloaded the mod, but those who did often re-downloaded it (because of updates, perhaps?).

Exactly. :)

Not sure how this goes for files under 2 MB, which does not require people to log in. I assume every DL from a non member would be a unique one, even if you'd download it multiple times, unless it takes IP address in account as well.

Well - it's 23 MB so only members can dl - I wondered if it took into consideration the IP address but can't understand why so many would want to dl it more than once?

Unique downloads are counted on individual files, and on your file page as a whole. For an individual file a unique download is a how many individual users (by IP or user ID) have downloaded the file.

On an entire file page, unique downloads are downloads from one unique IP address or user ID across all your uploaded files. If a user downloads your files more than once, and this applies to updates, patches, optional files, new versions, etc., then the files unique count will never increase past that initial plus 1.

Total downloads are, as the name suggests, the total amount of downloads, including repeat downloads.

So if you upload version 1, and someone downloads that, and then you upload version 2 and the same person downloads that, your unique counter will only go up by 1 on the file page.

It's basically a way to see how many actual individuals are playing your mod.

I download mods more than once all the time just because it sometimes feels like it's easier to just re-download the mod than it is to go through my download folder to find it, ESPECIALLY if I don't remember the name of the archive it downloaded as.

People probably re-download your mod a lot because they try a bunch of head packs out and end up wanting to look at yours again but either deleted the original DL or just can't be arsed to look through their download folder like me.
