[Idea] Male Nord companion

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:09 am

I'm posting to get feedback on a male Nord companion (Wolfie) I've been working on but ceased. My idea was to make a companion that travels with you as you progress through the main quest, similar to how Jasmine was written. The difference is that this one you would be required to pick up after you've retrieved the Dwemer puzzle box because Caius felt that you needed protection. I'm planning on getting back into Morrowind sometime next year and will continue to work on this if there's interest, otherwise I'll leave him the way he is. He's currently fully functional: his commands work, he warps to you, he has a telepathy ring, etc. He just doesn't have much dialog written outside of comments on the MQ - I think I stopped after you meet the Ashlander trader, but I would have to go through the dialog to make sure. In a nutshell, his background is that he's a former Imperial Legion soldier turned mercenary hired by Caius to protect you. Planned features included dialog with Jasmine (if both were loaded) and a romance option for female players. I have a couple of pictures of him taken by me and my wife in my http://s107.photobucket.com/albums/m313/gulfwulf/Morrowind%20-%20Wolfie/. Thanks for reading and for any constructive comments. :whistling:

Only thing that comes to mind is a backstory regarding his time in the Legion and his reasons for now being in the situation he is. The strength (at least for me) of Jasmine was her backstory and the situations in her life that needed resolving are interesting, making her a rounded and fun character. More than a meat shield that exists purely as a clotheshorse. If there were something in his past that you could explore and there were multiple outcomes it'd make it another great addition to Morrowind adding depth and character. :)

You've got a skill for writing fun, genuine characters with motivations - something to make the world feel more like a living, breathing world as opposed so a series of encounters that exist purely to give the player something to do. It'd be great to see another of those, just as Jasmine is..

Ok that's enough gushing for one day. :D

We've created a backstory for him, Hicks, it just hasn't been written in game yet, mainly because I'm still trying to flesh it out. Basically, he and his superior officer had differences of opinions about how some of his fellow soldiers were acting and he left. I do have some quest ideas, it's just been a matter of getting motivated to write them. Thanks for the input. :)

Got me eager to try it out now, well despite you know... not being complete. :S

Something that did just come to mind though. When with Jasmine there is the function that Caius isn't prepared to talk Blades business infront of her. Would there be the opportunity for some growing resentment between Wolfie (nickname?) and Jasmine over the trust that Caius has regarding each of them. Only reason that I bring this up is that I've been playing a lot of Mass Effect at the moment and getting the team you recruit to play nicely with each other is strangely compelling. Could make for an interesting extra dynamic?

Hope things are well with everything otherwise. :)

I don't know if I like the protection angle. Since most companions are often more trouble then they're worth in a fight and since all players characters are budding bad@sses it seems a bit of a stretch. How about a guide? Someone more familiar with the land, flora and fauna of Morrowind than the player character would be would be a perfect addition to the team. He could have unique things to say about some of the dungeons, maybe even force a dialogue window to warn the player about a trapped door or chest. That way he can be protective, without actually setting him up as another meat shield.

Other than that I say bring on the additional male companions!

Yes his name is Wolfie. Names aren't something I'm very comfortable with creating, so I usually use a dictionary of names. My alternatives were either Barrick or Garrick, both of which mean "bear" in Old Celtic.

Jasmine and Wolfie have a past that will be discussed around between them if both mods are loaded as soon as I get that written in. You won't need both mods to play this one, but you'll get extra content (eventually).

Here's what Caius says about him:

I fear you're dabbling in dangerous currents, %PCName. There's a Nord mercenary in town named Wolfie that I've hired to be your guide. He knows these lands well and will protect you if the need arises. Your task is too important to be left to one who has so recently arrived in Morrowind. It is my intention you both find this arrangement beneficial. You can probably find him in the Lucky Lockup, but I suggest you get over there quickly before he drinks himself under the table

And here's an excerpt of what Wolfie says about you being the hero of the land:

[Eyes you] No wonder Caius wanted you to join him, the Emporer thinks you're the Nerevarine. How does it feel, kid? I'm glad I'm not in your shoes, I can tell you that. Just remember that you're still a mortal no matter what everybody else calls you. You get cut, you bleed. If you bleed too much, well, Azura will have to find another champion.

DarkDiva, when I mentioned that Wolfie was going to be a bodyguard, I meant that's how I'm writing his dialog and background. I don't expect people to rely on him to protect them, but it was the angle Elaura and I came up with as to why he would follow you to begin with. Jasmine follows because you rescued her from imprisonment, Julan because you defeated some Clanfear that were harassing him, and Laura because she was your old-time girlfriend. I needed something different for Wolfie to have him follow that was believable. With the horrible NPC AI we're stuck with, I don't expect any NPC follower to be a very good melee bodyguard, but it's still fun to have someone to talk to in game occasionally. :D

Before I forget, thanks for the feedback you two. It is appreciated. B)

I like the name Wolfy since several of my forum friends use it in their handles, I can pretend we're finally getting a chance to explore the game together while treking around with him :)
