Steam update, you are the bane of my existence

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:16 am

So, I get that problem where "steam is preparing to launch Fallout:NV", and doesn't go any further. I followed the above stickied instructions, which failed. I go in to "delete my ini files and try again", and I can't find any. Not one. Up until this point, I haven't had any problems (apart from the standard incessant CTDs...), the only variable that has changed since my last successful session is the update. Now, I can't play my game, I can't find my ini files (and I'd like to think of myself as somewhat tech-savvy), and my fiery hatred for Steam increases exponentially every day.

Anyone have any suggestions, apart from boycotting all future Steam products (which I'll be doing anyway...)?

EDIT: I only now notice the date on the stickied post above...my problem remains the same. It's been maybe 2 days since the last time the game loaded successfully.

Try deleting these .ini files (these are default install locations).
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\fallout_default.ini
C:\Users\\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV\fallout.ini
C:\Users\\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV\falloutprefs.ini

If some are missing then delete as many as you can find then re-verify the game cache.

Also run the programs in the redists directory. Make sure to right click and run both "as admin".
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\Redists

You'll have to go into the directX folder and run the DXsetup file.

I thank you, sir...however, my problem seems to have resolved itself all on its own(!?). Everything seems to be working fine, through no action of my own. I don't get it, but I can't complain.

-those .ini files wouldn't be 'hidden' for any reason, would they? I was looking right where I'm supposed to be looking, but they just weren't there.
*shrug*
Maybe it was just a weird hiccup.
