PC requirements for modded Morrowind?

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 5:28 pm

Hello everyone!

I was thinking about buying Morrowind after finishing Skyrim (a long time for sure haha :P ). I played Oblivion before that but never had the chance to play Morrowind. I was wondering though, my computer is kinda old and I am not sure if it could keep up with the updated mod graphics. Here is my rig:

- Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2160 1.8ghz
- 2G Ram
-Nvidia Gforce 8400 GS

I do not want 1080p super graphics but just some updated graphics from the original Morrowind.

Thanks in advance for the answers!

Well I'm not a PC expert but I'm pretty sure my computer could not support Oblivion type graphics so something in between Morrowind and Oblivion I'd say? Sorry I have no idea of the mods that exist and my PC knowledge is rather poor :brokencomputer:

You computer won't have any problems to run http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1240985-morrowind-graphics-extender-mge/, but if you could play Skyrim then I can't figure it out why you shouldn't be able to play a modded Morrowind on your PC.

Of course. You should be able to run MGE and distant land (I ran distant land on a 6150LE :o) but don't expect to run it at the level some people show in MGE screenshots. Texture packs etc will be totally fine.

What EternalDarkness said. If you want to run Pelagiad Expanded, Tamriel-Rebuilt, MGSO, MCA, StarFire's NPCs, and MGE XE at full infinite distance and still get a good frame rate, then you'll need at least a single core processing computer clocked at around 10 GHz. But since no computer like that is on the market for consumers, I'd say to not run CPU-intensive mods, especially Pelagiad Expanded, until the US market starts releasing computers that have higher CPU clock speeds, like in the 5 and 6 GHz range. Just my opinion.

Um OT but clock speeds are not an accurate representation of the speed of a CPU as that is just one factor in how fast a CPU can process data.

Uhu... getting 50 FPS for Skyrim (Full HD, 16x AF, 8x AA and Ultra), and my Modded Morrowind gives me a framerate of 15-25 FPS.

Completely unsolicited advice incoming:

The biggest draws on framerate in my modded version of Morrowind seemed to come from 3 sources (in no particular order):

  • Distant Land cell draw distance in MGE
  • Number of NPCs loaded in any given cell (interior / exterior)
  • (to a lesser extent) Shaders

I would adjust these things first if you start running into performance issues. #2 is what forced me to uninstall Morrowind Comes Alive; having as many additional NPCs in towns as it adds absolutely clobbered my performance, to the tune of 8 to 10 FPS while in Balmora. I do not recommend this mod in general for this reason. My setup now runs at a cool 25-30 FPS in most instances (including in towns).

Texture packs in general have never seemed to detract from my performance. They will only load up your GPU's VRAM more. Keep an eye on your available VRAM when using high resolution texture packs.

For me I find using distant land to be unplayable, just having it activated with the distant land cells to 1 (meaning default vanilla). I run it on a macbook using bootcamp, which has core 2 duo 2.26 and a 9400m with 2 gigs of ram. Though I have no problem with texture or most mesh replacers, with the exception of the ridiculously high poly detailed armors mod. Am I doing anything wrong with mge?

Morrowind with mods can be more demanding than some quite new games. On my Intel E5300 2.6GHz, 2GB RRAM and Radeon 4850, unmodded Oblivion used to run at 60fps with AA and AF in 1920x1080. But, modded morrowind (MGE XE, 150 minimum static size, 20 cells draw distance, shaders, AA and AF), in 1280x720, in Seyda Neen or Balmora runs as low as 17fps.

Thanks for all the answers folks! I think increasing distance will hurt my computer really bad, I am more looking for better character models and textures is that really demanding?

No. You can run mods.. You can probably run quite a lot of mods. You probably can't run MGE to its max.

I ran Morrowind with 100+ mods using a computer with 256Mb of RAM and a GeForce 2, 16MB Graphics card. I also ran MGE with a 6150LE (Shaders killed that card, but a small amount of distant land seemed fine)

No, it isn't. I've got a ton of retextures and 200+ mods running on a mediumweight machine, and still have excellent FPS in Morrowind. The key is to make a backup first of your texture and mesh subdirectories, then install replacements and try the game out. The FPS killers are almost always 1) outdoors graphical replacements, or 2) mods of any sort that run a ton of scripts. You can get away with mods that change indoor textures, and there are plenty of outdoor ones that make things look better without slowing things down. Just do some visual comparisons. http://etherealsoftware.com.au/textpacks/index2.htm

As for MGE, some people swear by it, others swear at it. It can produce magical results, but requires a lot of personal adjustment to each system, and may work only partway. I suggest giving the Morrowind FPS Optimizer 1.9x a try. It focuses on mainly one thing, increasing visual distance. It does this extremely well, and you can set it to scale automatically depending on your FPS, if you'd like.

In my opinion I think you should run mge with render distance at 1-2 cells, that way it will run smooth and still keep that original mystic feeling of Morrowind, add some nice textures and your game will still look pretty and run good.

I've got a 2.6ghz quad OCed to 3.4
460 GTX SIL
4gig

1920*1080 (or whatever that max wide screen is)

And fully spiffed up with a 20 cell draw distance (MGE XE)I get between 20 (rare) and 50 (rare) outside FPS with an average of about 32.

This is with the highest texture quality, outdoor life, and all the extra outside NPCs.
