The NPCs in this game are boring and repetitive

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:47 am

I don't understand why companies like Bethesda can't make games that are as good as they used to be. Things just keep declining and declining, it's ridiculous. It seems like the only thing that matters any more is graphics!

Why, when something http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18CGW9P5Y9M used to be possible, is it that NPCs today are so boring, repetitive, and unimaginative? I've seen so many threads about people criticizing the NPCs for their lack of variety, for their lack of conversational skills, and for their complacency towards player actions. So, in this open letter to Bethesda, please just step back a moment and embrace what used to be possible, and for the sake of making an immersive and wonderful game, don't let progress in other areas slide in favor of graphics!

I think the thing is though, that we do live in an age and time where technology and knowledge is prevalent. What I mean to say is that I think we now live in a time and age with the right technology and know how, to make the NPCs not this way. It does take money and time as well, I definitely agree on that. But it's time to take the next step forward in RPGs, or that's my belief.

Some call this junk, me I call it treasure

Spells for those who have the talent to cast them

That spell looks like it will hurt

Keep away from me while you have that spell around you

Hey, I know you

That's just from the top of my head.

Great example of how NPCs could be if Bethesda would exert at least a little energy! Lazy developers = lazy npcs. I miss the old days.

Well... yes. Just for those who didn't pick up on that. I'm being sarcastic. Bethesda's NPC technology has advanced by miles and miles from where it used to be. And the fact that Bethesda chooses to do everything dynamically, instead of just scripting in "complex" interactions... well. I think complaints about the NPCs are unwarranted.

I agree they have some shortcomings that can be addressed and I support some constructive criticism. But, I do prefer that we keep it in perspective that this technology is quite unprecedented in RPG history.

Which is a bit of insult, imo. I'm the Archmage, lvl 29, high in conjuration. I do have the talent. More like "Spells to Kick ass with"

I too long for the days when game development was more about substance over style.

At the risk of showing my age ---> http://youtu.be/r7U2TFIayos
