Why can't we sell stolen items?

BECAUSE SHOPKEEPERS ARE PSYCHICS!

Obviously...

So much for non-psychic guards. Really?

I haven't had an issue with this in Skyrim, other than when I socked up Aventius in Windhelm, a guard came in and tried to arrest me.

I assume that it was because he happened to be right outside the house. Sounds carry through walls a short distance, even if the other side of the wall is in a different cell. That much is similar to Oblivion. Unlike Oblivion, in my experience, it carries a much shorter distance.

I do like the whole regional bounty thing. That was something I always modded into the game for Oblivion. There is also a "witness" system so you can clear your bounty by killing all witnesses. I just wish it was a little more detailed. Instead of instantly getting a bounty from a villager seeing your crime, it should just say "You have been witnessed committing a crime" where it normally shows your bounty and only when or if one or more witnesses makes it to a guard to tell them of the crime should you actually receive the bounty and get the guards coming after you.

I think I might have run into an issue with Tonilia (the Thieve's guild fence NPC). My character currently has a stolen gold necklance in his inventory but it doesn't show up when I try to sell to her. I'm not sure if she doesn't want that particular item, or if it's a bug. It has me wondering what to do with the necklace though.

If that necklace is listed as "Stolen Gold Necklace" it's a quest item.

Why can't we sell everything to everyone? Why not have only one merchant in every town with unlimited money? Hell, why not take it up to a next level and allow selling items from your own inventory? Or better yet - sell gold for more gold! /sarcasm

If I remember correctly there's a shopkeep in Windhelm who doesn't mind stolen goods. In the Dark Elves Quarter.

I appreciate your input and explaination but if you read my post, I was referring to the Stolen Item aspect of it only. I know you can slay your witnesses, though one civilian seeing it automatically makes it a CRIME without them darting towards the nearest guard first.

At any rate, I have issues with the Stolen Item, the rest is pretty sensible gameplay wise.

There is something really bizarre about stolen items.

For example I noticed in my cupboard I had a stack of silver ingots that were showing red. I take away one ingot and all of a sudden the stack is not showing up as red now... and in my inventory I have a single silver ingot that is also not showing up as stolen.

I guess I must have laundered it heh.

hmmmm

Well having owned a shop in real life, I would get lists of stolen goods from the Police every week. When someone tried to sell me something on that list, guess what....I did not buy it...

So not too unrealistic really. Plus it meant they could give a purpose to the thieves guild and to speech perks at the same time.

Seriously... they have put things in the game to solve this issue... things that work both in character development and also Lore. I say it is a nice immersion giving feature.
Yer maybe it is not easy mode that if I steel stuff, I get no penalty... but hey it is a role playing game.... not meant to be able to finish it before you start playing... maybe do a little work... you will be surprised...it can be rewarding! :flamethrower:

sometimes you just have to make some adjustmens in the mechanics....if you could just go to another town and sell [censored] you would be rich in one hour or so....

Indeed...... and maybe all the people that want it so easy mode can just use the consule, and let us play the game how it was made to be played.

I have found an explanation that solves everything!

Everyone in Tamriel labels everything they own with magic, because heroes of prophecy kept stealing everything that wasn't bolted down. :hubbahubba:

Indeed or... one of those ultra violet marker pens! Quite feasable.... got one in real life so.... People will no doubt say that it is far fetched for people to mark up their goods in case they are stolen, but Dragons are not far fetched at all:P

If they made it possible to sell stolen items to various (unscrupulous) merchants for a lower price than you would get if you were dealing with a thieves guld fence then it might work.
Not all stolen items, just some that the buyer can "get rid of".

I'm sure most people ignored this post, because it makes them feel uncomfortable (I know, logic hurts my brain too), but so far this is the only guy who understands the actual reasons that shopkeepers would believably know what goods you've stolen.

Unlike a lot of folks I don't mind perking out Speech, so I'm eventually able to sell anything to anyone, including stolen items. That said, I still don't like how a merchant can automatically tell apart stolen items in my inventory, as there's no way they would actually know it was stolen until, and unless, the owner came looking for it.

Then again, I rarely steal anything anyway, as there's seldom anything actually worth swiping. That said, I do have a Thief-type character planned out who will steal a lot of stuff, since he (or she, I haven't decided yet) won't be doing much wandering around early on and as such will need the extra income in order to buy those supplies he can't steal.

It was like in this Oblivion too, get over it. For the record, you can sell stolen goods in different holds.

Heavy Thieves Guild Spoilers
Spoiler
Join the thieves guild (Riften Marketplace in daytime) and do the side-quests (From Vex & Delvin). Completing 5 side-missions in Markarth, Whiterun, Windhelm, and Solitude (Only do Riften ones if you just want the money, otherwise skip), you get a special side mission for that town. Once you do that, you unlock a new merchant in the thieves guild and in Windhelm and Markarth you unlock a new fence, although personally I just used Tonilia to sell my goods whenever I got new missions. As you get each special quest done as well, the fences receive more money. Tonilia had 4k when I was finished with the "Restore Thieves Guild to former glory" Trophy.

You can either do that or waste points to get the 'sell stolen goods to merchants' perk on speech tree. Personally, I liked the spoiler tags, as you make good money at the same time. I never had any trouble selling stolen goods on my thief that has 100 pickpocketing. If you want the game to be like Morrowind so badly, go play that instead of on here complaining about it, or better yet if you have the PC Version, wait for some mod.

Yeah.. because if you stole a goddamnd apple or a bottle of skooma and even if you don't get a bounty, suddenly the entire population of Tamriel will know it's a stolen item!!
Surely the poor victim sends a message to everyone that his/her precious little apple has been stolen and also gives a precise description so everybody can recognize it!
FffUFUFUufUUuUUuUUUuU :banghead: Why can't we have the good old method from Morrowind?! If you tried to sell a stolen item to it's previous owner, you got the bounty. It was perfect.

Almost.

Wait a minute..!

Four weeks ago, I had a leek that looked EXACTLY like that one -- and THAT leek was stolen!
THIS is the leek, and obviously, YOU stole it!
Guards, Guards! Leek-thief! Leeeeeeeek thieeeeeeeeeef!

There are obvious hints all over in the game, telling you where to look for the thieves guild. There is even a loading screen with the information.

Spoiler
Go to Riften and ask around about the thieves guild. They are not hard to find. As soon as you join them, you will have access to a fence. They are actually better than a lot of other vendors anyways, because they will buy anything and everything. If you want to be able to sell stolen goods at a regular, non-thieves guild merchant, then you will have to raise your Speech skill up, get the proper perks, and invest 500g in a shop. It is easiest to just join the thieves guild, but the game does have more than one way for you to sell your stolen items.
