I want my unlock spell :(

Your loss, what can I say.

There's no reason to use lockpicking in oblivion. It's like deliberately using rusty iron gear when you could use daedric weapons.

I respect if a thief type character uses only exclusively lockpicks instead of magic to open locks.
Its a roleplaying style really, just as i wouldn't use any lockpicks if i roleplay my char to be exclusively magic using only.

Alteration Magic made Security completely obsolete, especially in Morrowind (it wasn't as bad in Oblivion). While it would make sense that a Mage can do everything, and more, I'm glad that they decided to make Magic a little bit more limited in its function.

You know what made security obsolete in oblivion and remain obsolete in skyrim? Security did. It svcked as a skill and still svcks as a skill because the skill svcks, alteration svcking did not change that. The only thing that would stop security svcking is improving security.

Skeleton Key? I mean, it's practically free pass to every locked stuff. Boring time waiting for "auto-try" to succeed tho

Mages with levitation would be broken because many dungeons have a simple drop from a high ledge to get back to the start, and they usually have a good chest near that end. So if you were a mage with levitation you could walk in the dungeon, fly up the ledge, loot the good chest, and leave.
However recall and almsivi/divine intervention would be nice...

They actually wouldn't. I want to levitate in my game. This would not break balance as long as you are not forced into using it.

So because of a gimmick level design where there is a short cut to get out of every dungeon levitation would be broken?

1. It is okay for people to go through a short cut every now and then.
2. The hidden door that is only opened by a level on the other side would stop you anyways.
3. They can have some other gimmick like teleport pads.

I have yet to see a dungeon design that would have been hampered by levitate, and yet I've seen in almost every dungeon places where levitate would have been fun and would have improved the level design.

I personally think we should be able to choose how to do each thing in accordance to character, for example:

A sneaky type might poison an arrow and fire it from the shadows or dart forward and bury a couple of daggers in his enemy.
A mage would melt their faces with fire or summon daedra to do their dirty work.
A warrior smashes or slashes his enemy with brute force and sharp steel.
(add all other character types here).

Why not the same for opening a chest?

A sneaky type uses a lockpick with precision and skill to open the lock quietly and discreetly.
A mage uses his/her power of alteration to lift the tumblers by magical force. (after all, he can lift other objects around the chest with magic)
A warrior just smashes the lid of the chest with his warhammer, but might break an item inside, and certainly would not get away with doing it discreetly.

After all, this is a single-player game, it doesn't have to be 100% balanced in every aspect. It just has to be fun!

Absolutely agree on this post and you have listed out the perfect alternatives to differentiate the different approaches to a locked object
from 3 different playstyles. I hope Bethesda takes note of this.

What about invisibility on target?

Skyrim is a great game but if they do not get the magic back to Daggerfall/ Morrowind style they can kiss my money goodbye.

Lesser games having better magic, it is a disgrace.

that brings up a good point, why the heck cant we cast helpful spells on target? or use on touch spells? or make spells to hurt us for whatever reason? another thing that really annoys me, there is no real invisibility in skyrim, its just chemeleon (and a low level one at that), heck one guy at the college is trying to learn invisibility again (the rela invisibility) that is an out-right insult to everyone who wants to be an illusionist (and i had an illusionist planed out) or a trickster (which is what i like the most)

i wont go so far as to say i wont be buying anymore games (since im a rogue above all, not a mage) but it is a pain in the ass, and i can see why magic lovers would quit (if my class was so gimped i could barly function the way iv been able to for the past 4 games i would stop too)

edit: thought up another point, why was my class made so op this time yet magic has been gimped beyond anything iv experianced in a game that provides the ability to become a mage?

Waterwalk too please.
Why would a mage like me swim when he can walk?

I remember the days of Oblivion when my friend and I made a Jesus class because we just figured out we could waterwalk. XD

one of the problems i have with skyrim is that it pushes you to be a jack of all trades type charecter mages should open locks with spells fighters should be able to bash them open

I agree with the game balance reasons to remove those spells/buffs :grad:

But still, I want them all back!(+custom spells) no matter why :swear:

The only reason it would break the 'balance' is because the whole stats/magic system is changed into something borderline [censored]. If they hadnt done that there would have been no problem whatsoever.
The changes we have now seem mostly changes for the sake of change, not for the sake of improvement.

you can have your lockpick spell back when I get my sneak ability to destroy something with a huge fireball. Ooooooooooooh wait see how that doesn't really make sense

I truly don't understand the comparison here, unless your just trying to be childish...its not a MMORPG.

Where is dispel?
I want to dispel my summon so I can be undetected.

I want to debuff an enemy.

Spells are lame, broken and useless in this game.
Bethesda, I have played Daggerfall.
how could you

Skeleton key was in both games, and in Skyrim it's not a permanent reward.

WOW reading some of these replies makes me wish I could invade someone's Skyrim game and just melt their face or sneak one shot them with an arrow just to justify their misguided demands of a balance concept in a solo RPG OR at least give them something legitimate to gripe about lol.

Creation Kit and Modders will save us all. Long live Unlock!

You want an unlock spell.

I want to be able to bash open chests/doors like I could in the first two games.

Everyone wants something.
