I was walking to Winterhold, when I was attacked by a ice wraith. A hunter tried to assist in killing the wraith, but I accidentally killed him, just as the wraith was killed by the hunter. Then a Winterhold Guard attacked me, as he had seen me 'assault' the hunter. I killed him too. Now I have a 40 gold bounty, and when I walk to Winterhold, the guards attack me, and I can't pay off my bounty. Do you know how I could fix this?

P.S. I'm on a PC, so the console command to get rid of bounties would be helpful too, then I would just have to throw 40 gold away as compensation.

sheathe your weapons and talk to a guard, if its only 40 gold they should just let you pay

That's the weird thing, as far as I can see the guard was the only witness. But still, should I not be able to pay off a fine of 40 gold when I enter the town with my weapon sheathed, instead of being attacked by the guards on first sight?

Apparently you can get out of trouble through the Thieves Guild but I've never tried it.

That's the problem actually, I killed the guard outside of town, and I walked into the town with my weapon sheathed, when the guards attacked.

if they attack you with your weapon sheathed, then you have to draw and the resheathe your weapon. it happened to me outside the western watchtower after I murdered a half dozen Thalmor Justicars...had to get off my horse, draw my sword, and then sheathe it to make the guards stop attacking me. then i told them i was Thane, they said sorry, and walked away.

You have to sheathe your weapon in front of them, or else their surrender acceptance script won't trigger.

Thank you for your advice. It didn't work though strangely enough, so I had to reload. At least it didn't cost me too much time. It does seem like a bug, as I tried Vikingdragons' suggestion, but they kept on attacking me. Now going back to Skyrim again :hubbahubba: .
