Any way to avoid skill books?

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 5:47 pm

I love to collect all the books I can possibly get my grubby hands on in this game, but I am starting to get annoyed by picking up some book which increases my pickpocket skill. I don't want to level this bloody skill up, I am a mage god dammit, not a thief. But I MUST have them, my collection would be incomplete without the 'beggar' or 'thief' books :(

I just want to know if there is any way around obtaining these said books without having to buy them from stores or gain the skill increase from them.

Seriously, there are like 5-8 skill books per profession. Heaven help you if your pickpocket and 2h skill raise to level 20. Its the end of the world.

They should put the skill gain at the end of the book. That'd get most gits to at least flip the pages and maybe a few of them, with a little luck, will read.

Look at the cover some skill books are blue or have a picture of the skill they'll level you up in.

Yeah I know :(

I see you are trying to be sarcastic, but these skills will count towards my leveling and will cause me to level up with skills like 2 handed, which I will never use, and sends me behind in the level scalling world of skyrim.

Skillbooks are normally in the 50-60 gold price range, most of the other books are below 30 gold.

But, I don't think some of you understand.

I am essentialy playing a "librarian" class, as I call it. My aim is to collect all the books in the game, I'm just finding it annoying that during my epic quest I am constantly confronted with books which have skill increases which I have no need for, yet I pretty much need them if I am ever going to fullfill this task I have set myself.

Yeah, but remember, librarians know EVERYTHING. Have a question? Ask the lady at the library. It's because they read so many books. So think of it that way.

I don't think my local librarian knows how to chop someones head off with an axe or steal from someones pockets, but I see where you are coming from.

I don't think you understand how leveling works...

A minor increase in a skill you're not trained in will hardly effect your level opposed to skills that you are proficient in. It's not like Oblivion where 10 skill ups gets you a level (and even then lockpicking would be a minor skill that still wouldn't effect your leveling).
So having your lockpicking go from 15 to 16 will hardly even effect your experience level compared to your Destruction or what-have-you go from 45 to 46.

Won't affect your level much...If you find ALL of them, sure, you might gain a couple lvls, but really not enough to affect the game's difficulty in a notable way.

I worried about this at first but then I realised it really does not matter. Increasing skills WON'T tailor your character alone without spending perks in that category so simply ensure that the perk points you gain from these unwanted skill levels are only spent on the perks for the traits you do want. It's not like it prevents you getting the traits you do want to 100 and doesn't force you to use perk points for those skills.

But, but... It's realistic. If you read a book about thieves and lockpicking, your knowledge of the skill will increase whether you want it to or not.

If you read a book on lockpicking, clearly you will have a slightly better understanding of how it works (slight skill raise) but it wont really affect your ability to pick locks because the boost is so small. It makes perfect sense, to me atleast.

I would just not worry about it, and about the level balancing or w/e, its going to be so small you wont even notice it :P

I'd like to be able to pick up the books without reading them so I can save them for later. Wasting a book to raise a skill from 15 to 16 when it could be used later raising it from 75 to 76 or something is a bummer.

It will grant you an additional 10 magicka and even let you pick a new perk. The only moment you'd actually get behind level scaling is when you can't pick a profitable perk because your skill is too low. Besides, if you are level 30 or more, gaining a few points into extremely low skills won't even gain you one sixth of the Xp required to level up. Don't worry :D

They're aren't books on that subject in a real library, but there are books like that in Tamriel. The odds stack massively in a scholar's favor that they'll gain skills from reading books that they could have gotten in the field.

Check for a graphic on the front. I recall the magic ones at least have their, star sign on the front.
Otherwise, to collect them without gaining the skill point, simly enter the command menu for your follower, talk to the or hold the activation button/e key whilst pointign the crosshair at them, then tell them to pick it up. And simply trade it from them?

Although I've not tested sending npc's to pick up books, I just collect lore-filled ones. No harm in you trying it though. They seem to pick up everything else.
