Random game crashes... help please

Post » Tue Oct 13, 2009 7:11 am

Hello...
I have crashes that seem to be totally random... I'll start playing the game, and then at some point within first 20 minutes (sometimes its 5 minutes, sometimes its 45 minutes), the game will just stop working/crash to desktop and then Windows will search (unsuccessfully of course) for a solution to the problem... I reinstalled the game and tried to follow load orders and all that using Mod Manager. The game would work just fine before I used mods, so maybe it is my order, but everything should be compatable because I followed recommended load orders. I have the game of the year edition with shivering isles and knights of the nine expansions. Installed the most recent Official Patch.

I have a new Dell Studio XPS (got it in Nov and it has plenty of RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4670, etc)
Here is my load order.

Oblivion.esm
Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esm
TamrielTravelers.esm
Unofficial Oblivion Patch.esp
UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp
Oblivion Citadel Door Fix.esp
Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch.esp
Natural_Habitat_by_Max_Tael.esp
Natural_Vegetation_by_Max_Tael.esp
Natural_Water_by_Max_Tael.esp
Living Economy.esp
Living Economy - Items.esp
Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esp
Vanilla_Oblivion_Skill_Rates-6548.esp
TamrielTravellers4000.esp
TamrielTravellersItemsnpc.esp
TamrielTravellersAdvscript.esp
ShiveringIsleTravellers.esp
ShiveringIsleTravellersFriendlyFaction.esp
RenGuardOverhaul.esp
Harvest [Flora}.esp
ChapelTithe.esp
DLCZShiveringIsles.esp
Harvest [Flora] - Shivering Isles.esp
Lich King's Helm v 1_0.esp
New Frostmourne Sword by Jojjo V 1_0.esp
Villages1.1.esp
The Lost Spires.esp
RenGuardOverhaulShiveringIsles.esp
Knights.esp

Natural_Weather and Natural_WeatherHD are not checkmarked.

Any help is much appreciated.

If the game itself works fine, until you install mods.... then it is most certainly a mod problem.

Also of note, if you have GOTY edition, you don't need any of the official patches, as the game is already up to date.

After you uninstalled the game, did you delete the install directory? Oblivion does not clean up after itself.

You may have a mod conflict here. I suggest you start with the 'OOO'-mod first and here is the http://sites.google.com/site/aelius28/home you should read.

Most of the links to those mods on that site don't work?
Shouldn't I have unofficial patch first, then OOO?

This may be addressed better in the mod forums.

You may want to try the Oblivion Stutter Remover (OSR) and Windham Earl's Crash Prevention System (weOCPS), both of which require OBSE. That should add to your stability.

Also, try disabling all unnecessary background programs and services: antivirus, etc. This will help with stability also. (You can download a free program called Gamebooster to help with all that.)

If doing the above doesn't alleviate your crashing, you might want to try cleaning many of your mods with TES4Edit. Save this step for last, because there is a bit of a learning curve.

Make sure you have http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1069109&hl= installed. Well, that goes for all mods.

What's Vanilla_Oblivion_Skill_Rates-6548.esp? Might be perfectly fine, but OOO comes with a level stock addon that does the same thing.

Guess you wrote down the list manually so DLCZShiveringIsles.esp is DLCShiveringIsles.esp?

You can get your current mod list from OBMM, but Wrye Bash is preferable as it gives version numbers as well.

I'd also recommend using http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1070108. It sets the correct load order but also gives valuable info/recommendations.

Also, try disabling all unnecessary background programs and services: antivirus, etc. This will help with stability also. (You can download a free program called Gamebooster to help with all that.)

That's good advice. Using Game Booster myself. Before that I ran the game on a clean boot for a long time after realizing it made the game much more stable.

I also make sure the drive is defragmented and that the registry is cleaned - several times a week in both cases.

Not that it's relevant to your crash, but Living Economy has been replaced by http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25078. More options, more control over matters.

Have you made any adjustments to your INI file? Do you keep a viruschecker running in the background? How much memory do you have?

Thanks for all the advice. I'd prefer to avoid having to do anything too complicated.

I'm currently running the game on a New Laptop...
I have 4 GIG's of RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670

I was told to try turning off the ATI Catalyst AI option which I did (but still froze up.. . though it took longer to do so than before (maybe something overheats and causes crash?)
I don't ever recall crashes (definitly not as often as now) before I installed MODS...

Post your mod list with Wrye Bash so we can get the mod versions at least...

RenGuardOverhaul had some CTDs issues previously, make sure you have the latest version.

edit:
Also ordering your list with BOSS can't do you wrong...

Hello, I just downloaded RenGuardOverhaul 205... so we'll see if that works. I dont' use Whry Bash. It looks complicated to use, like BOSS. Are they easier to use than they seem, or is it going to take some work to figure them out?

BOSS is a one-click utility. You install it, run it, and it automatically sorts your load order. It's probably the easiest to use Oblivion utility out there.

Wrye Bash looks intimidating at first because it's got a lot of options. There's plenty of documentation on how to use the program floating around on these forums, the http://wryebash.netai.net/, the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes4Mod:Wrye_Bash_Help, and even on the http://sites.google.com/site/fivefries/fcominstallationguide. It's really nowhere near as confusing as it looks at first glance.

It would be well worth the time investment to learn its basic functions. Most people use it simply for the Bashed Patch feature, but it can do a whole lot more. Oblivion modding would be sorely set back without it.

Get the latest version of Wrye Bash = 277.

The runtime libraries and other such things will do no harm to your computer. Just follow the readme instructions and install those things. If they are in fact already installed, you will just get a message saying so. No harm done.

What is Wrye Python? I downloaded 277 and I think the Python thing... so I install Python and then install 277 (it isn't self installer, at least not yet).

Hello,
I went ahead and loaded up Wrye and BOSS. Here is the mod list from Wrye. It is very confusing. When I look at the saves category almost all my saves are red... I assume tha tmeans there is some conflict. When I click on save directly, most of the mods are red? They shouldn't be all conflicting should they?

Thanks for all the help. It is great when a gaming community comes together to help eachother out.

Can anyone check out this mod order and give me thoughts on it? Hopefully it will work now and I won't get the random crashes (seem to happen mostly when I'm out in the world (not in cities or caves/dungeons)).
