Suggestion for the developers: Please don't alter the level

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 9:14 pm

Agreed with OP - I didn't like the change made in FO3 with DLCs witth lvl 30 cap and 9 to all SPEACIAl. Made the whole char creation/specialization irrelevant.

Agreed with freqnasty too - in FNV besides energy, unarmed and barter my char was kind of jack of all other trades with the help of magazines, drugs and clothes. It takes a bit effort but it is possible.

EDIT
In FNV we have cap at lvl 30 but perk every two levels which makes it fine. I wouldn't mind a slower progression though, it was too fast in FO3 and stills seems to fast in FNV to me.

Slower would be good - I'm capped already and I haven't even been to the Fort, and I have a list of a dozen side quests yet to do, with possibly a dozen more I could add

Devs- you decided how the game should be.

Now have the dignity to stick to your guns. It's your creative vision, after all.

I can't tell you how much I agree with you, Killian Darkwater. :tops:

The current leveling system is just right. Characters in RPGs should either have strengths and weaknesses, or be a jack of all trades while being a master of none. They should not be a demigod by level 15 (ala Fallout 3).

I'm very happy that Obsidian was able to balance out the level 30 cap unlike Bethesda. And I'm also glad that they either nerfed or fully removed perks that weren't even close to being balanced (Grim Reaper's Sprint, Almost Perfect).

Though I do wish the leveling was slower than how it is now. Thank god there's mods for that though (sorry consolites).

They should alter perk gain to once every third level though. >_>

I wish it was this way too, but I guess they had to find a way to cater to both crowds here as much as possible, so they chose every 2 levels instead of 3. I'm sure if it was every 3 levels, there would probably be mini-riots on the boards from the people who started with Fallout 3 (worse than how they took the current system now).

Could have been fixed if they decided to let us have the Skilled trait which I suggested to them over and over. <_<
I seriously hope they add it in a DLC. (I should just copy paste this line)

They made it so the OCD people who collect drugs, clothing, magazines and whatnot can "max" out their character. People who just want to experience all of the stories can still do so and not feel like the game is super easy.

Game does have Fast Learner Perk that gives +10% XP, and you can get it twice, for a 20% gain. I stupidly used it (1X) my first playthrough, and reached lvl 30 before I had even talked to House

The whole point of an RPG (or at least one of the points!) IMO is that you don't become good at everything in one run, you have to replay to find out different aspects of the game with different skills. Even in this game I still managed to max out Science, Lockpick, Sneak, Repair, and Speech, and got Barter, Survival, and Medicine to 80 (so can be maxed with magazines with the perk that doubles their effectiveness), Guns at 50something and Energy Weapons at 40something. I ignored all the other skills.

The other point of an RPG is the story, and IMO anyone who feels that they don't have any incentive to play after hitting the level cap is kind of missing the point by several thousand miles.... really, NO incentive to play, you don't want to see the end of the story?

Personally I always play to explore every location I can and do as many quests as I can, and I hit the level cap too early, but I wouldn't want to see it raised at all, I don't want to max out every skill and SPECIAL, and perks every other level was something of a relief after FO3 when every character ended up more or less the same.

ETA: As I said on another thread the only problem I found was that levelling was too fast, and too much XP awarded for quests.

This and Gifted, good sir. I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I didn't see Gifted in the list of traits. :sadvaultboy:

I also wish Finesse was back to being a trait instead of a perk. It made more logical sense that way.

After playing a good deal of New Vegas, I feel that the skill system is balanced well enough where it's not easy at all to become a jack-of-all-trades character.

This is a good thing, as it increases replay value by enforcing character specialization.

The purpose of this topic is for the developers that I know roam this forum to see that the balance should not be upset at all, no matter how many people may cry "remove the level cap!" or "I miss bobble heads!"

So please, don't go against your original vision, which has been amazing and pleasing so far.

Anyone who feels the same, please feel free to chime in.

Yea I don't think we need to go any higher than lvl 30, those who do feel the need to be a overpowered god like player shoould buy a PC and use a mod or make their own.
But that just my two caps

Officially "chiming in" to support Mr Killian Darkwater.

No more perks or level ups needed! FO3 got ridiculous after adding Broken Steele and alowing Demigod status for the Lone Wanderer.

Ok, I've removed the flames and the flamebait and I expect this thread to be conducted in a civil way. You can disagree with one another but the insults will stop. I will be warning anyone who indicates someone else is a lesser person than they for their opinion. Show respect or don't post. I'll be watching.

Damn. Sounds like I missed the fun. :P

Agreed with TC. Hopefully the cries of casual gamers are ignored. They can go play the hundreds of other games catered to them.

Personally I think if they raised the level cap to, say 45 or 50 for instance, Obsidian should/could balance it by giving the player less skill points per level, SIGNIFICANTLY less, (i.e. at INT 10 You would normally get 17, reduce it by 8 or so...just an example as that may be a tad too harsh on the less Intelligent-oriented players), and then making it so every 3 to 5 levels you can select a perk (therefore only getting perks every once in a while). This would make both skill selection more pertinent for the next levels but also perk selection just as much. They could also implement a system which will allow the player to go beyond the skill cap of 100 and give benefits for doing so, as to encourage some form of specialization--I already know of a couple of mods that do this quite well. Aforementioned mod http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35562 and http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35708.

The above is just an example of what can be done, though.

Mainly, though, I want to at least say this: DON'T bar out the option of allowing people to level up purely because your play style doesn't agree with it. Instead, make it modular as they did with hardcoe mode, i.e. the ability to turn a said leveling system on or off. This way, people that think leveling up will upset balance can turn it off, and people that want to continue leveling up may turn it on and continue to do so.

Leveling was really well-balanced in this game. Doing a system as I mentioned may be a good path to take if the devs want to allow a much more broad level cap. The devs seem competent enough, so I think they will be able to maintain balance effectively if they choose to allow more levels.

I don't understand why so many people think every game should be just the most hardcoe challenge there is. I like to hop on a game and play it to relax... I have a job I don't need a convoluted and overcomplicated game to add some stress on top of things.

Folks, there is a designated thread for DLC suggestions long since this thread was created. No need to bring this one back from the dead. I thought for a minute this was the game I was playing and the thread came back to life like my rad scorpion did the other day before the very quick second patch released.

I'm killing this thread for good now and referring you all to that DLC thread. I'll look for the link and edit it in soon enough.

Ah yes, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1138694-dlc-suggestions-3/
