Real Role-Playing in Skyrim

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 9:29 pm

I found Skyrim to be more enjoyable when I ignore fast-traveling completely and focus on role-playing survival such as alchemy, archery, hunting, cooking, long travels with warm gear, staying in camps and inns for safety, etc. It makes the game much longer and more relaxing. The last three characters I played with fast-traveling made it seem unrealistic, cheating, and careless when I jumped from one place to another, and also cut the game too short. I can understand that some will prefer fast-traveling to save time, but it makes it feel like cheating in some way and miss out on the beautiful scenery. What are you thoughts on this?

Everyone plays in their own way, and I'm glad that fast option are there for folks who want to use them.

That being said I play almost exactly like you do. Heck I even try and eat 'in game' on a regular and realistic basis.

it's fun to just...completely immerse yourself in the world for a bit...makes for a nice break from this world.

Depends on how you play. I play with a softcoe RPg experience.
I mostly do:
Limit how many times I can Fast Tavel
Sleep at least 6 hours
Carry two armor sets no more
I also pretend I'm telling a story about the character. I pretend I'm a narrator and I tell the story in my head when I'm playing.

I stopped using Fast travel after playing Fallout 3. Now I do mostly without it. Sometimes I cave in.

I play like the OP, but who cares what my thoughts are on it? only one playing at a time. For those that like fast travel, ignoring cooking, etc...more power to ya. Have a good time.

Yeah, you're right. It's nice to have options for everyone instead of being stuck with limitations.

Yeah, Skyrim is a great place to get a break from work and the real world even for a short time.

The last part about narrating your character is really interesting. I wonder how I can do this. I've heard people saying that everyone tells their story different with Skyrim, but narrating by yourself while playing? I would like to do that.

A live-off-the-land build:

Bosmer Ranger
Archery
Sneak
Restoration
Alchemy

That was my first character. Made it to level 26 then I abandoned him because sneak archery is too easymode and I started getting bored :/.

I can roleplay AND fast travel.

It's called imagining that I actually walked along the roads until I got to my destination. :P

Why not move the slider up on the difficulty mode to make it extremely hard?

I tried that before and it didn't personally work for me because it's like I really skipped past the guards, wolves, giants, idiots, bandits, without doing any blood work or sneaking, thus missing out necessary skill improvements. Just a thought.

Heh, I like to play exactly like that. Most of the time I don't even use carriages but hike everywhere. Also making sure to sleep at least 6 hours a day and eat enough food. Also loved starting out by chopping wood in Rivertown and helping on the farms in Whiterun. Can't wait for the mods to expand on jobs and such features.

This wouldn't be so bad if there were encounters that could happen while you fast travel ala Fallout or something. Getting from across the map to the other without a single thing changing in the world is kind of immersion shattering to me personally.

I made a character just for RP. It's really fun. He's a thief.

Just because you do not encounter things en route doesn't mean the world pauses everything it's doing while you move. NPCs still go about their activities and move around, even when they are not rendered on screen.

Yeah, but nothing worth noting. They move around, sure, but that's about it.

They can kill stuff. I entered a cave with some injured guy outside, gave him some potions and said I'd kill the monsters inside to avenge his buddies. When I came back out after clearing the cave of evil, he had just finished killing 4 bandits.

Anything they do while you're in another cell, they can do while you fast travel, too.

Ill start playing like that when the ps3 framerate issue is fixed :) not enjoyable roaming the country when you have stutters every 3 seconds.

It's quite easy and you feel you're actually the character( if you First-person narate the story). I did it with oblivion.
I made a Dark Elf who found the Dark Brotherhood's sanctuary by mistake. He was so scared that they will hunt him that he left to live in the Shivering Isles. His fear of the brotherhood made him crazy so he fit in well with the residents of the isles.

I'd really like a way to disable fast travel altogether, just so I'm not tempted when I get into a situation that "seems" unsolvable. I'd rather not have the option so I can force myself to figure it out.

I tried 'enablefasttravel 0' from the console, but that only works until you zone to another area, like walking through the doors of a city. It then re-enables itself. Hopefully someone will create a mod for a permanent solution.
