Why am i so weak?

Most of you talk of being overpowered (at least the ones who do talk)

I am playing a mage and im mostly using destruction, conjuration and restoration . I am level 12. 40 something destruction and the other two are in their 30's. my one handed is a little under 30 but most other things are around 20.

I never used to play mages. I found fireballs too weak in oblivion. In skyrim some enemies are destroyed by fireballs in less than a dual wielded hit and if i take a few mana potions i can take down a standard dragon fairly easily.

However i am not doing well. Bandits and draugr are usualy very easy. Falmer, dwemer , mages and such enemies i find very difficult. My tactic has pretty much turned into "run, make fire atronach and heal" whilst possibly supporting the atronach if i think it will do me good. I am having lots of trouble with the falmer right now.

I have found two dragon priests. One on the word wall with throwing shout and the event is described here http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/637/dovakhin.png and another with some nord woman looking for a scroll. I managed to kill it After many lives and much hiding. He was so powerfull that the fight just was not fun. His magical attacks took away over half my health whilst mine (mostly ice spike) took away millimetres. He could turn my conjurations against me, block my spells and i think he might have had infinite magika due to my staff doing 25 health and magika dammage not having much of an effect on him.

another thing that bothers me is that the gameworld is realy alien and i havent even been to most places. In morrowind i finished the main quest at level 14 or so and in skyrim i am level 12 and i still haven't visited every city! I am not even far in on quests!! (i am looking for the staff of magnus at the moment.. i havent joined any other factions yet and in the main quest the last thing i did was witness a dragon being resurrected (not far)

My spells are weak, my armour is weak, the weapons that i find are weak.. am i supposed to become a death machine with magic or am i doing everything wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong... you're just in an unforgiving world. Pay little attention to the people complaining about being overpowered. You'll find you enjoy the game more.

What you'll find is a very short period in between struggling with basic enemies and being completely overpowered. After you hit this point the game loses challenge and you'll miss when you struggled to kill enemies. The game seems daunting and cruel now, but after visiting several cities and realizing Winterhold, Dawnstar, Falkreath, and Morthal are about the size of Riverwood the world will start to shrink. That's the strange thing about Skyrim, half the time it seems incredibly cruel and hard, then half the time it's completely too easy and almost trite. Still, I think it's easily one of the best games I've ever played, just has some balancing issues.

Focus on your conjuration a bit more, and get some magicka regen gear. Also, it sounds like your levels are inflating faster than your skill base. Try to keep all of your focus skills within 10 points of each other to prevent levelling too fast.

If you want to create a new mage character, use http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1273561-pure-mage-guide/ guide. This has helped me build a successful mage for the high levels.

If you don't want to start over, if you haven't done this already, use the Atronach Stone. Magicka regeneration does very little during combat (the "negative" part of this bonus), and you get +50 Magicka and 50% Magicka Absorption.

The OP lost me at finishing the main quest in Morrowind at level 14. Why do people bother playing this size of game world if they are just going to whip through it like a hurricane? I am just trying to understand the point behind this logic. Also Skyrim isn't alien enough compared to Morrowind in my opinion.
