I know why the Dwemer went extinct.

They filled their homes with deadly traps and homicidal robots, not to mention they had a serious pest problem.

I already theorized that as a joke thread a while back.

Be careful, people will completely overlook your sarcasm and pounce on you with their lore-hammers like cougars on my thief. BOTH types of cougars.

I know the real reason why they are gone:

During the whole thing Dagoth Ur, Kagrenac, a Dwemer, had found Lokhran's Heart and devised some tools to turn it into a weapon. When Nerevar confronted Kagrenac with Dagoth Ur, Kagrenac used the tools and in that instant, all the Dwemer in Nirn vanished.

Dagoth Ur believed they were destroyed utterly for their blasphemy. Nerevar believed that they had ascended to a plane beyond Mundus.

I read this in some book called "The Battle of Red Mountain."

The funny part is I never actually found out what happened to them despite having played morrowind way too much...now I know.

Well the thing about TES lore is, even the books presented in the game world might be filled with contradictions, misconceptions, and such.

The dwemer disappearing might never have an answer which makes it more intriguing.

Hmm. Pretty sure someone else made this joke thread.

BUT if you do a side quest for the College it gives some insight of how they disappeared.

Spoiler
The heart of Lorkhan was overused and made them all disappear.

It's been discussed to death in the Lore section :) - I'm pretty sure they solved it actually. IIRC then the dwemer sort of unmade themselves to the moment before creation. Anyway, I'm no lore buff, I like to be kept in the dark, it's cozy here

It was never explained in Morrowind, that's why.

The book I referenced seems to be new to Skyrim.

As for lore contradicting itself: I agree. I read a book that talked about the events of Arena, but it said it all happened 3E 389. I have been switching between Skyrim and Arena, and Arena takes place in the Second Era; not the 3rd. XD

Spoiler
However, I just realized that perhaps, like with Alduin, the Dwemer merely transported themselves forward in time.

Actually, the events of Arena happened in 3E 399. here's the http://uesp.net/wiki/Arena:Arena if you want to be sure.

Then why does the opening intro say Jagar Tharn betrayed Uriel Septim in 2E 389? :P

The Dwemer scholar in me is twitching.

The book you referenced is in no way new to Skyrim. You can read the accounts of the Battle of Red Mountain in Morrowind, two separate accounts are given to you by Vivec. The disappearance of the Dwemer has been very thoroughly discussed.

For those who want the legit explanation to the disappearance of the Dwemer:
Spoiler
The short version: they became the skin of Numidium. It was an intentional move to remove themselves from existence in order to fulfill their interpretation of the meaning of life. It is also why, in Arniel Gane's College of Winterhold quest...
Spoiler
he disappears and you get the power to summon his shade. Just as the Dwemer bound themselves to Numidium, Arniel Gane--unintentionally--bound himself to you.

The Dwemer are not gone, who do you think the Falmor are?, so many Dwemer souls were taken to fill soul gems to place in their constructs, what remained are the blind Falmor, of course this is pure fiction on my part, but would certainly upset a lot of lore buffs if it were true

I remember in Morrowind in at least 1 Dwemer ruin there was weapons and pieces of armor next to piles of ash, at places where guards would be posted, leaning towards the Dwemer, in the moment when the tools were used on the heart, were turned to ash.
