what to do when... (spoilers)

When you're doing a quest and halfway through you realize it'll ruin your roleplaying.

For example...
Spoiler
I was doing the nettlebane quest for that lady in the temple of kynareth in whiterun. I figured it was just something along the lines of "go get this weapon and help me out with this tree" (admittedly I did not pay too much attention to the dialogue, so perhaps I misunderstoof). It was all fine and dandy but when you go to get the sap from the tree, the people in the sanctuary beg you not to hurt the tree. That was it for me - I didn't want to be a [censored]. However, I couldn't just go back and tell the priestess " I won't help you anymore" nor did I think killing her would be justified...

What is there to do in that situation? All I thought of was abandoning the quest, but I hate leaving things unfinished...

If you let a pilgrim from the Witherun's Temple go with you to the cave he can point you to another way of completing the quest.

Don't worry, there is a good solution (if you brought the other guy from whiterun with you).

Either you're roleplaying or you're being a completionist. You can be both, you can't do both. One will have to take priority.

That tree needs to grow some balls anyway, a little bit of pain will probably be good for it.
And just ignore it's overprotective keepers, the rest of the tree's in Skyrim don't get that kind of treatment and look how well they are doing.

I hate the pilgrim. I cast healing hands on him and his response was "Oh, I guess you think youre better than me cause you can do that" or something. He charges after everything even though hes wearing plain clothes and it was a pain to get him past the two towers alive. I was so happy he decided to stay at the tree and I didnt have to escort him back to Whiterun. Most hated NPC in Skyrim for me so far.
