Skyrim save file size

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:03 am

These are the largest save files in a Bethesda game after many hundreds of hours of play.
I do use mods including OBSE and FOSE (which have their own saves) and have all DLCs

Oblivion - 13 MB
Fallout 3 - 13 MB
Fallout NV <10 MB

Vanilla Skyrim first save was 3.1 MB save 40 was 13.9 MB (about 85 hrs of play). I am guessing I will be over 20 MB soon.
That's not a problem in this day of terabyte drives, but it is a potential problem for SSD users. Also, I like to slip a few saves onto an old flash drive as backup and to play on other computers (via steam)
Just as an informal poll, how big have your saves been getting?
Are we seeing a bloating problem that may need to be addressed by mods or patch?

The main thing effecting savegame size won't be the number of hours, per se, but how many changes you've made in the gameworld (NPCs killed, creatures killed, items moved etc.) When a cell resets your savegame might reduce a bit in size, as the savegame is now only tracking those changes that are permanent, rather than transitory.

I'm not surprised savegame size is bigger in Skyrim for two reasons. First, there's a lot more content crammed into the same land area; and second, cells reset after a much longer delay.

[edit]
Of course, there's always the possibility of a bug that's causing excessive savegame bloat for some people :(.

19mb saves, I have 4,7gb total save folder.
Since I use SSD I had to move my save folder to HDD, I was running low on space.

15 MB each, after having played for about 80 hours.

I think the size depends on what you have achieved, earned, explored and purchased, this data needs to be stored somewhere.

But I don't care about the size of the save game, I'm more pondering why the executable of Skyrim TESV.exe needs to be almost 19 MB in size. Seems like modular programming and devloping is out of date these days...
