While I'm waiting for my DVD...can I download via steam? : V

I'm still waiting for my disc to arrive from Amazon...can I tell Steam to start downloading the game and activate it when the disc arrives, or am I stuck waiting for snailmail and then a long update for patches?

Lacking in precognitive talents, I unfortunately can't see the key til it gets here...so the bit about preloading the game in the sticky thread, above, is no longer possible?

Preloading is only for before the game is released, but even then, if you don't have a CD key there's no way for Steam to know that you own the game.
